Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Stewart.
Sydney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Art and architecture are my first love.
When I started sewing, I wanted to incorporate that making every piece and collection reflect a work of art. I started making pillows and curtains and then after my first outfit, I knew that fashion was my lane. Menswear is my main focus but I started in womenswear. I am currently in the process for my next collection moving into a unisex collection based on my favorite painting. This collection is dedicated to my godfather who recently went blind.
My current focus is on building my brand for its collections. I want them to bring emotion like a painting.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road is never smooth. I don’t want to paint a pretty picture of magic but of truth. You have to work hard for what you want. Never let what others say darken your dream.
I was personally told by a family member I wouldn’t make it as a designer. That I would be broke and that I should go to school to be a lawyer or a doctor, so I’ll make enough money. While those dreams are still amazing, it wasn’t my dream. Keep your head up and have faith. Cry if you need to, but remember you have to wipe your eyes and keep pushing.
This is only the beginning anything is possible. You will fail at somethings but that doesn’t mean you can’t turn that failure into a success. You are strong, beautiful, intelligent and amazing!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stewart By Stewart, Ltd. Co. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a high fashion designer. I specialize in menswear but I’m moving into a unisex or a men and women’s line.
I am most proud of my creativity. As a designer, creativity goes hand in hand. You’re creating art you can wear.
What sets me apart from others is my overall goal. I want my company runs like how it was years ago. When fashion was purely for the art of fashion and not a show of who’s coming.
A lot of new designers including myself get into this client phase of just making piece here and piece there but my company is for its artist’s fashion collections.
Other than my collections I would say my presentation. I believe presentation is key when releasing your collection. Build sets for all my shows to help bring the collection to life.
Who have you been inspired by?
My mom.
She’s the strongest woman I know and the first person to encourage me that being an artist is amazingly beautiful!
There are plenty of women I look up to and have inspired me, but it was my mother, the one that couldn’t repay for the love and support she gives me.
When I was 17 and wanted to start my company, my mom was right there. I funded everything myself and put on my first solo show.
