Life and Work with Tabitha Wiggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Wiggins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tabitha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hey there! I go by Tabby, Tabs, Dear (gotta love my husband), and my favorite one of all… Mommy. I currently live in the metro Atlanta area with my husband of 8 years (love of my life for 13) and our 3 kids. You can check them out and all their quirks on our family page WiggedOut… I love my family, but enough about them… you came here to talk curls.

So, where do I start? I’m a lover of all things curls, love, and life. I’ve been a “hair naturalista” all of my life but I will admit, I didn’t always embrace my natural curls. Growing up as the only girl of 3, outside of Pittsburgh PA there weren’t many places I could look to for inspiration. It wasn’t until I moved to Atlanta and was overwhelmed with the array of chocolate girls like myself did I begin to rethink my perception of what is beautiful. In the Spring of 2011, I did what I never thought I could, and broke my mother’s heart at the same time. I chopped off my waist length straight hair and began my journey of happy healthy hair! Now, I’m not going to say I made a choice and never looked back. I have certainly had my moments when I have loved my flat iron far more than I should have and attempted a kitchen dye job on my own a time or two. But what has remained true all these years, is that I have learned so much about myself, and this journey goes far deeper than curl types and porosity levels. I learned that life changes, plans don’t always go as expected, that no amount of money can ever make you truly happy, you can find love in a place you NEVER expected, and to love the people who treat you right and pray for the rest.

Now, although I could go on for days in this one meant to be an introduction to who CocoaBrownCurlsXo is, I feel like it’s too hard to put it all in one place. Who I am as a woman, mother, friend, natural hair blogger has changed so much over the years. I pray that I continue to change in all the great ways that a person does as they continue their journey towards personal growth and success. So, with that being said I hope that you continue to follow my journey and get to know more about me as we talk curls, love, and life. Xo

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc.– but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey as a naturalista and now, an entrepreneur, has not been a smooth road. When I first made the decision to step out in faith and monetize my brand, I was faced with so much self-doubt. Sure, I love to talk curls, but I wasn’t sure if my passion for all things curls was leading me to my purpose. I wasn’t sure if I could help other girls like me on a broader level. In the beginning, I, unfortunately, spent more time on second guessing myself than actually trying!

In August of 2017, my husband surprised me by trademarking CocoaBrownCurlsXo. That simple act was all that I needed to wake me up. Here I am, second guessing myself when I’m surrounded by people who truly believe in me. The following month, I got serious about my brand. I began to network more by submersing myself in the culture for collaborations and exposure, created my website, and surrounded myself with mentors and other entrepreneurs. I knew I needed to focus on staying confident and inspired if I wanted to make an impact.

Here I am, a year later and I can certainly say my brand has made some strides. If I could give other women any advice it would be to show up for yourself every single day! Do not let self-doubt or comparison keep you from your destiny. It’s the little moments that you put into it every day that eventually add up to the big moments. Also, surround yourself with those you can learn from and those you can teach. Teaching strengthens your passion and learning strengthens your mind.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with CocoaBrownCurlsXo – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a naturalista, I have managed to expand my brand by becoming an influencer, brand ambassador, and curl consultant. As an influencer and brand ambassador, I work with various companies to help promote their products to various audiences. As a curl consultant, I provide services to other natural hair woman and men to help them on their journey. I assist with product selection, techniques for styling, and finding salons and stylists in their area. They are able to book online directly through my website by selecting one of three options depending on their needs. I have gotten such great feedback from those that I have helped. The internet, social media, and even YouTube can be so overwhelming with information for those on their own natural hair journey. I take pride in being able to help them filter out the information that they need for their own personal journey.

As a brand, I am most proud of how I have stayed accessible to my audience. I stay engaged, I cheer for and support others, and I’m always open for new collaborations within creative spaces. I acknowledge that there is a seat at this table for us all, and not being afraid to cheer for those in the same space as me is what I believe sets me apart from others.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
When I was growing up, rocking your natural curls was not embraced in my community. Long straight hair was what was considered beautiful so I felt compelled to keep my hair that way. Week after week, I applied heat further damaging my natural curl pattern. I didn’t understand the bigger picture then. I was allowing the opinions of others and what was considered the “norm” to keep me from being my true self.

It wasn’t until I moved to Atlanta and began to meet other woman rocking their natural hair that I began to embrace my own curls. That is also when I realized that “going natural” was a journey of its own. My personal journey was not one that I can say that I’ve done solo. I’ve had mentors, I’ve watched a million tutorial videos, I’ve read books, stumbled through various salons. You name it, I’ve tried it! I am thankful to those who have helped me along the way. I am thankful to those who reminded me every day to love myself as I am.

Growing up, not embracing my curls, and then surrounding myself with so many amazing women who consistently stressed self-acceptance is how I got to where I am today. There are still so many girls out there who are still mentally where I was, not knowing where to even start on the road to self-acceptance. I think my past is exactly what makes this so successful for me now. I can relate to those I am helping on such a real level. I used to tell myself some of the same things and convince myself that my beauty was based on others standards. I want to be f0r other women what so many women were for me. I want to help them learn to love themselves, and how to get started on this journey.
