Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Brooks.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As an entertainment and lifestyle publicist, I began gaining my own knowledge of the industry about 13 years ago. At the age of 12, I decided I wanted to be a publicist, and I ran with it. At the time, being a record label publicist or having your own company working with music artists seemed to be the coolest job ever, so I took it upon myself to do as much research as possible; which included, reading books, articles, researching who was the who’s who of the industry, watching television shows and more.
Fast forward six years, I attended Kennesaw State University with a major in communications and a concentration in public relations. I interned all four years of college, and found myself acquainted with some of today’s hottest music producers, artists and DJ’s coming out of Atlanta, this is when I got a real taste of the entertainment industry. But, two pivotal internships truly assisted in the growth of my career, one was completely remote as the agency was Miami based, while the other was a traditional internship. Both experiences allowed me to grow from internship to paid freelance publicist. Although given freelance opportunities, I applied to countless corporate positions to no avail, which is what pushed me to start Everything Taylored, a boutique public relations agency offering entertainment & lifestyle brands pr campaigns tailored to their needs.
I now continue to push forward as a growing small business owner, assisting in raising my client’s awareness and visibility while also taking on large scale freelance projects in the realms of public relations, event activations, and production.
Has it been a smooth road?
Ultimately, things have fallen into place for me, but that did not happen easily or overnight. It takes a lot of prayer, manifestation and intentional work. In the early stages, a freelancer and/or a business owner, in general, if you don’t put yourself out there or go searching for work, you won’t eat. So, it is an everyday job in itself to create continuous opportunities.
Also, in getting my foot in the door it was easier for me than others, but I continuously preach to young women or anyone who is passionate about something with little to no experience, just do it! And when you do it, do it to the best of your ability whether being paid or not. If you’re an intern work like you own the position, and soon enough, you will. I gained paid opportunities from my internships by being passionate about my position, being willing to put forth the effort & work to get the job done & being open to new opportunities. You may not get to the position or goal the way you see fit, be open to taking alternate routes. If it is meant for you, it is already yours, you just have to do what it takes to get there.
And lastly, trust your gut and always stick to your morals & values, no opportunity or amount of money is worth devaluing your morals, mental state or health.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an entertainment & lifestyle publicist, known for assisting brands in connecting their audience through media channels. I also specialize in talent logistics (event production), brand partnerships and sponsorships. As a brand I am most proud of assisting and being apart of the growth of each of my clients, setting goals and seeing them come to fruition, knowing that I have a hand in the expansion and success of others brands is very special to me. I think what sets me apart from others in my industry is I build genuine connections with my clients and media. I like to work with people with great energy who I can truly connect with. Energy, connections and long-term relationships mean more to me than any dollar or opportunity.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I/we create our reality, now more than ever women are equipped for most if not all positions. We can do just as much if not more than our male counterparts, while also assisting and being a major force that pushes them (males) to their next level or greater positions.
Today’s opportunities are endless, as a woman, if you feel as though a position or opportunity is a challenge to obtain, create it for yourself. The opportunities are definitely there, even if it’s one you create for yourself before the world believes it.
