Life and Work with Vett Vandiver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vett Vandiver.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Vett. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Back in middle school, I started my own graphic design company because I saw my dad being an entrepreneur and wanted to have my own business too. I designed cards, invitations, and flyers for friends and family members – as a preteen! Hustling is clearly in my blood. In college, I was more aware of how business really works and what paperwork I needed to do so that I could officially start and develop my business. VKV (my initials) felt like the perfect name for my small business and my logo reflects my style as well. Deciding what I wanted my company’s services to include came from researching larger communications firms, talking to others in the industry, and being honest about what services I could effectively deliver to clients. I’m constantly brainstorming and revamping my company with new ideas – some are successful and some fail. But I always remember how my now profitable company started as just an idea. In 2013, as a senior in college, I founded VKV Communications LLC, a small firm offering affordable and effective communications consulting and communications services for individuals, startups, public and private companies, as well as non-profit organizations. Photography, graphic design, and communications consulting are the most popular services we offer, and to date, we’ve had more than 500 clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been wavy and bumpy, but it’s been the right journey for me and I’m thankful for all of the obstacles along the way. Starting a business is challenging, but it’s very doable. Maintaining a business is the hard part. People are excited about a “new” business, yet the natural excitement fades the longer you’re in business and you have to constantly work to maintain and improve your company. Feeling like I was starting a business in an overly saturated field was a struggle in the beginning, but I quickly moved past that when I realized how many clothing companies exist and yet new companies can enter the market and be successful. Comparison is the thief of joy and productivity. Instead of comparing my company or offerings to other creatives and businesses, I focus on my progress and celebrate those companies knowing there’s room for us all. Social media has been a blessing for businesses across the globe, but it can also make you feel like you’re not doing enough. My other piece of advice is to not let the numbers you see on social media determine your self-worth or company’s worth. I am completely booked for photo sessions most months, but someone may not know that looking at my social media engagement. Many people don’t engage publicly but make moves privately. My main concern is growing my company and that comes from booking photo and communications clients, which I do every week.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with VKV Communications/VKV Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I’m currently going through all of the “How I Built This” podcast episodes. I think entrepreneurs are some of the most misunderstood (yet very interesting!) people in society. I love hearing how people have built their companies and the major sacrifices they’ve made along the way. I get motivated every time I hear a story and I gain more respect for my fellow entrepreneurs. I also read a different Bible app plan every month on a topic that I think will benefit me professionally or personally.
