Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Rose Crosby.
Hi Abby Rose, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was actually a full time student at Georgia state doing business management. Right before Covid my Dad was diagnosed with ALS and needed 24/7 care. I needed to be able to make my own schedule and honestly, college just wasn’t a good fit for me. A close friend of mine Kara and my cousin Haley both do hair and encouraged me to try it out. I had a really difficult day in class one day and decided to drop all of my classes and try hair school. I fell completely in love with it. I was able to go 3 days a week so I could rotate schedules with my mom so I was able to take care of my dad while he dealt with ALS. I had a natural talent for hair and makeup, so I picked it up pretty fast. It’s a passion I never knew I would find. The relationships I’ve built from this industry are something I wouldn’t trade for the world. Hair ended up being my saving grace, I’m forever grateful I found it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I graduated hair school as soon as COVID hit the world. Everything shut down, so it was hard to build a clientele. Thankfully women will always want their hair done, even during a pandemic. This industry can also be really hard on your body. Getting regular massages and staying active has really helped me. Scheduling time for self care is truly a necessity.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is I genuinely love my career. I love my clients, the creativity, and the ability to control my own income. I get to hangout with my girls as a job. We have so much fun while they’re in my chair. I would say I specialize in lived in color and hair extensions. The best part about lived in color/balayage looks is that they’re low maintenance. Being able to go months in between appointments and still feel beautiful is a huge help in our current economy. As far as extensions go, they are so versatile and unique. I have clients that deal with bald spots or thinning and just want to feel like their younger selves again. Extensions can do that for them! It doesn’t have to be about dramatic length and changes, it can just be about subtle improvements that make you feel more like yourself. (Or it can be super dramatic, major length changes) I truly love it all. I try not to limit myself, I want to be able to accept any woman that walks in the door.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Totally, dropping out of college to do hair was a huge risk. I don’t have a traditional job with benefits and retirement planning. I have to save for my future, so there’s a lot of responsibility that comes with it. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid, I don’t have FMLA, sick leave, etc. You can be super successful with this career you just have to be smart about savings and truly work for it. There’s also risk in trying to techniques/ideas on clients. You just have to try things on your closest clients that are willing to be experimented on. Usually people are down for it!
