Today we’d like to introduce you to Abel Zhang.
Hi Abel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Guangxin Zhang, but you can simply call me Abel. I’m a multidisciplinary designer who specializes in Motion Graphic and Visual Identity design. Right now, I’m fortunate enough to work as the Senior Motion Designer at Comcast, where I am responsible for defining the motion language and crafting engaging brand experiences and visual journeys.
Before landing this exciting role, I had the amazing opportunity to work on commercial projects for some esteemed clients like Schneider, Richemont, and Diageo in the vibrant city of Shanghai. Those three years were truly memorable, but I eventually felt the need to step away from the commercial realm and embark on a new adventure. That’s when I made the decision to pursue a master’s degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design – a move that marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter in my life.
Leaving everything behind, I bought a one-way ticket to a foreign country where a different language echoed through the streets. My time at the Savannah College of Art and Design provided me with the freedom and flexibility to truly focus on subjects and topics that deeply resonated with me. I delved into topics like LGBTQ issues, the representation of People of Color, fascinating Technologies, and the captivating world of movies. All these experiences led me to take a different path in my career – I’m determined to utilize my visual and motion design skills and boundless creativity to tell untold stories and influence people in the most impactful way possible.
Throughout my journey, I’ve had the privilege of living in diverse places, from bustling international cities to charming small towns. Each and every experience has molded me both as a professional and as an individual living out my daily life. I thrive on the unexpected and embrace whatever comes my way, eagerly awaiting the surprises that await me around every corner.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I always consider that I’m the luckiest person in the world, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges waiting for me along the way. Whether it’s navigating the professional landscape or facing personal hurdles, pushing the boundaries of design can be a real struggle. It’s not just about creating visually stunning work; it’s about convincing others to believe in your ideas and trust in your abilities. That’s where the real challenge lies.
Working with people from diverse backgrounds is something I cherish. They have this incredible knack for refreshing my perspective and opening my eyes to what truly matters. Of course, this also means that we often find ourselves at crossroads with differing opinions and decisions. But I see those moments as valuable opportunities for growth and learning. Each interaction becomes a chance to absorb knowledge, challenge my own assumptions, and ultimately become a better version of myself.
Even though I’ve come a long way, I’m well aware that I still have so much more to learn. Life is a continuous journey of growth and self-improvement, and I embrace that wholeheartedly.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Over the course of my career, spanning more than five enriching years, I’ve had the privilege of wearing different hats as a multidisciplinary designer. I began my journey in a traditional agency, where I immersed myself in the world of print ads. Designing booklets and posters for clients such as 3M, Diageo, and Schneider allowed me to hone my skills and uncover the potential of motion graphic design within our industry. It was a pivotal moment that sparked a desire for a more dynamic path in my creative journey.
As I ventured into the realm of motion design, an exciting opportunity came knocking on my door. I had the honor of collaborating with Nebraska Impact and the Governor of Nebraska, Pete Ricketts, along with the first lady, to embark on a project that aimed to bring the captivating artwork of the Capitol to life for all Nebraskans. Through the project titled “In Our Bones – The Story of Nebraska’s Heritage,” we breathed new life into the stunning artwork adorning the Capitol building, harnessing the power of motion design to showcase its beauty and significance.
And now, as the Senior Motion Designer at Comcast, I find myself standing at a monumental milestone in my career. In this role, I have the incredible opportunity to amplify the voices of the forgotten and shed light on those who have endured unique situations. One recent project that holds a special place in my heart is the celebration of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Day at Comcast. Through this initiative, we had the privilege of casting the spotlight on individuals who have unique stories to tell, allowing their voices to be heard and their experiences to resonate with audiences far and wide.
With each new project, I’m reminded of the power of design to create meaningful connections and provoke change. It’s a constant source of inspiration and a driving force behind my commitment to using my creative skills to champion important causes and shed light on the human experience.
Any big plans?
I’ve got something truly exciting brewing in my life right now. I am planning to embark on a journey as a digital nomad. It’s an opportunity to embrace a life of remote work and endless possibilities.
Over the past three years, I haven’t had many opportunities to explore different corners of the country. That’s why I feel that now, more than ever, it’s the perfect moment to pack up all my belongings, load them into my car, and hit the road. There are a few places that have been calling my name for quite some time, like Santa Fe and the vibrant San Antonio.
Beyond the allure of visiting new places, my decision to become a digital nomad is also driven by a desire for personal growth and creative inspiration. I believe that immersing myself in different environments, surrounded by new cultures, landscapes, and people, will serve as a catalyst for my own personal development. It’s a bit daunting to set off on this adventure alone, but I firmly believe in living life adventurously and embracing the unknown.
I have no doubt that this digital nomad lifestyle will bring about transformative and rewarding experiences. It’s an opportunity for me to not only grow professionally but also explore my own passions and curiosities on a deeply personal level. The blend of professional growth, personal exploration, and the newfound sense of freedom that comes with this lifestyle is something I really look forward to.
