Life & Work with Alex Enriquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Enriquez.

Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at KnuckleUp Fitness at the age of 11 (circa 2010) under Steve Mitchell, began wrestling at Cambridge high school (4 years) under Don St. James, and continued in college for two more seasons under Christian and Ashley Flavin. I later graduated with an exercise science degree at Life University in 2021 followed by receiving my black belt under Bruno Frazatto and Nathan Hadley in December of that year after making the switch to Atos Atlanta in late 2020. Some of my accomplishments include Multiple Gi and No Gi IBJJF Pan American titles (orange, purple, and brown) in weight and open class, 2021 IBJJF No Gi Worlds Title (brown), IBJJF Gi Worlds Medalist (Blue, Brown), 2021 ADCC East Coast Trials Runner-Up (-60kg) as well as 3x GA Girl’s Folkstyle State Champion, 3x High School Folkstyle (USAW) and Freestyle (Fargo) All-American, and 2020 WCWA All-American.

I began strength training and lifting under Monique Travis at the age of 14 and have enjoyed learning about personal training and CrossFit ever since. I was also fortunate to begin teaching Brazilian jiu jitsu and kickboxing classes at the age of 16 and have continued since. My goals include winning multiple black belt world titles (gi and no gi), an ADCC title, and becoming a notable jiu jitsu coach/instructor that helps guide you to achieve your fitness and sports goals.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My career has been bumpy but optimistically brighter than others. I went through bad weight cuts/temporary eating disorders in high school and two major surgeries (shoulder and knee). But thanks to a professional support team now, I have been able to accomplish goals and overcome challenges with ease and experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional Brazilian jiu jitsu competitor/athlete! I have a wrestling background that aids in my craft too! In competition, I am known for my aggressive style, takedowns, top heavy passing, and chokes. At the gym, I am known as a great teacher and friend too! I am most proud of some big tournament wins, but mostly watching my students grow and win! What sets me apart from others is my mindset and humble trait. I believe in not letting anything stop me from being the best I can be whether it’s ego or tangible challenges, I make sure nothing gets in my way…

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned along my journey so far is that it’s always good to be humble and often good to be humbled.
