Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Bill.
Hi Ali, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started acting at age 5. After seeing a local production with my mom, I begged her to let me audition for their next show and she agreed. Unfortunately, I completely froze up. But! That is when we decided I could start taking classes – dancing, acting, singing… I loved to perform. I started dancing and acting competitively, and I was accepted into the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I majored in and received my BFA in Acting. After graduation, I moved to NYC. I was there for over 12 years and then my husband and I decided to move to Georgia to be close to family and explore the Atlanta market. We have been here for almost 3 years now!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. In my personal opinion, a career in acting isn’t linear. And it’s not for everyone.
There are times when acting was my main source of income and then times where I was struggling with four other jobs. There were times when I had to put my mental health first. There are times when I had to say “no” when I wanted to say “yes” (and vice versa). There are big events that I had to miss for my work.
And to be honest, there are times where I’ve had to remind myself that acting isn’t the only thing that makes me happy in life. If I continue to be so focused on one thing, I miss a lot of other beautiful things in life that bring me joy. It’s a constant balancing act.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor. I have my BFA from UNC School of the Arts. I was in a lot more theatrical productions after graduating, but have since shifted my attention to film/tv and a lot of commercial work. I love making people laugh. I love being a part of a production that’s collaborative. I love improvisation. I love writing. My dream is to be on a long running sitcom. Hmm. What am I most proud of? That’s hard. I’m proud of my degree. I’m proud of my first commercial where I worked with Jerry Seinfeld. I’m proud of being in the Fringe Festival in NYC. I’m proud of the communities I am a part of. I’m proud of the representation I’m with. I’m proud of my current co-star roles on Bull and And Just Like That…!
I’m proud that I continue to act and put my heart into auditioning and making connections.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes! Firstly, you can act from anywhere. I thought I was chained to NYC. And don’t get me wrong, I love New York. I’m a New Yorker, no one can take that away from me. But being able self tape has changed the game. I’m glad I get to live down the street from my mom and dad while also submitting to projects and keeping my representation! It’s a win-win.
