Life & Work with Amir Duke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amir Duke.

Amir, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Starting my career in the music industry, I didn’t have an internship or any connections to get in the door. I started doing as much research as possible regarding different industry roles and the ins and outs of how a label works. Last summer, I started my industry journey by participating in Diddy’s “The Excellence Program.” This six-week course focused on music, agency, & entertainment. Each week, the participants heard from Diddy, French Montana, Agents from WME, CAA, & UTA, and actors. After each week, an educational quiz was given to ensure we understood these individuals’ knowledge. Throughout the summer of 2021, I constantly researched opportunities within the music industry. My consistency led me to multiple music college programs & webinars. Although it wasn’t an internship, I learned valuable information that was extremely useful when finding a perfect opportunity.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My career journey in the music industry as a full-time college student is not easy. Knowing that it’s difficult, the success I see in my future keeps me going. As stated before, having patience is the key to my success while being in college. I’ve learned along the way to be on time, consistent, humble, & not to give your best ideas away. In time I’m most excited about my journey as a continuing Brand Partnerships and A&R Specialist. I want the world to know about me & my brand because I’m on the rise as a young executive & an industry changer.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My next step in the door was becoming a student ambassador for The Recording Academy, which allowed me to start networking with the people who work at different chapters. This role allowed me to become a Grammy U member, which opened up many doors, such as the mentorship program. This program allowed me to be a part of many private listening parties from labels such as 300Ent & CMG The Label. From there, I ventured out to seek other opportunities within the industry, such as being within the first cohort of HBCU interns at the Revolt Summit, being a mentee of the 1824 UMG Mentorship Program & becoming an EICOP HBCU in LA finalist. My exciting journey in the music industry landed me a college marketing role at Sony Music Entertainment. I got to work with many artists such as Latto, Nardo Wick, Normani, Chloe Bailey, Kirk Franklin, Tai Verdes, Rza, & Kandi. Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Due to the covid-19 crisis, I’ve learned to be diligent with other people’s time & services. As I continue to network during the pandemic, I’ve learned to make sure my name & brand stands out in the space that I’m in. Also, as a future executive in the music industry, it’s imperative that you keep in touch with the people you meet at any event you attend due to the fact that you may need a favor down the road in your career & vice versa.
