Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Scherer.
Hi Annie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from the Albany, NY area but I moved to Nashville about two years ago. When I was six, I started classical piano training and performed piano for 13 years. I would often compose my own sheet music and create little jingles. Growing up, I solely listened to my parents’ music, which mainly consisted of 70’s rock n’ roll (The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks) and 70’s/80’s pop (Madonna, Abba, Queen.) All of this combined has had a huge impact on my music taste and writing style.
I started songwriting more seriously when I was 11. Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” album had just come out, and it was the first contemporary record I became acquainted with. As someone who had already dedicated most of my life to music, it was the sign I needed to go full force and pursue my dreams. I taught myself guitar and began gigging throughout the Albany area. My first recording experience happened when I was 15. I was introduced to a Nashville producer, and together we created my first EP.
A few years later, I began producing on my own. I released my full-length album, Garden Bed, which was entirely solo-written and self-produced. The album earned me the award for the “Best Local Performer” in NY’s Capital Region and received a lot of press.
In October 2021, I moved to Nashville, and I’ve had an incredible time here so far. I’ve met amazing collaborators, and I have a wonderful band who backs me at my shows. This year I was the runner-up for a major competition here called Music City Mayhem. Following the competition, I performed at Musicians Corner, an annual festival series at Centennial Park. I also signed with AMAX Modeling and talent agency, and I’m excited to learn more about other facets in the entertainment industry.
Right now, I’m working on more singles, playing lots of shows, and constantly networking with other creatives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a journey for sure. The industry is constantly changing, and it can be a challenge trying to keep up, adjust, and find what works for you. For me, social media has been the trickiest. There is a lot of focus on numbers and followers, and there’s often an expectation that artists are also influencers. I’m an introvert, so this doesn’t come easily to me, but I’ve found what works for me. I’m always willing to learn new trends and try different approaches.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My music is somewhere between dark-pop and alternative styles. I’m influenced by female artists like Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and Weyes Blood, as well as classical music and rock n’ roll. Being somewhere between genres has its ups and downs, but I think it makes my music unique, especially in the Nashville non-country scene. I love combining beautiful melodies with beautiful words and finding cool chord progressions that feel natural.
I’m proud of the fact that I mostly solo-write, and I’ve produced almost all of my music. My songs feel authentic to me, and there aren’t many female producers in the industry.
What are your plans for the future?
I hope to continue to grow with every song I put out, and every show I perform. I’m very excited for people to hear my upcoming singles. It’s the best feeling when people really resonate with your art. I’d also like to expand within the entertainment industry and challenge myself to try new things.
