I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road along the way. During my adolescent years, I was exposed to more mainstream western and classical music, having a mother who had been classically trained as a professional Music Educator. My college years at an HBCU, where I attained a Business Management Degree at Hampton University, opened an entirely new world of music to me, where I became attuned to the powerful rhythms of Afro beats and melodies. This prompted me to mix my earlier mainstream music with this rich blend of hip, hop, jazz, rap, and genres. Many did not believe that I was versed in both genres which gave me a cross-cultural edge on marketing my business to a multicultural audience.
Thus gave me yet another title of and Open-format DJ.
Another struggle was being accepted into the local marketplace where one was expected to choose only one style of music. Despite that struggle to move up, I leaned heavily into the motivation and encouragement of my grandmother and an older cousin, kwame, who even though he passed away suddenly, I still regard him as my big brother and mentor.
Both family members as well as my mother instilled the importance of being consistent and dedicated to my goal of being the best in my chosen craft. These are the driving force behind my success as an international open-format DJ
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As referred to earlier, being an open format DJ with the capacity to blend, mix and smoothly deliver diverse music from all ethnicity sets me apart in my field. I am very passionate about what I do and bring a lot of energy during a performance which is contagious to the crowd. This can change a mediocre ambiance in the hall to a festive and fun-filled room of partygoers. I have a very large repertoire of stored music that allows me to perform for clients from wedding events, of varied traditions, pageants, greek organizations, festivals, children’s parties and political rallies,
I mastered the craft of hyping the crowd and also spending time with the artist I am backing to understand his emotional take for his performance. I sometimes emcee the event for my patron. What sets me apart is my command of multiple genres of music and my ability to blend these sounds for a unique delivery of my music selections and overall performance at my contracted venue.
My tenure includes working with great DJs like DJ Quicksilva, Baby Drew, DJ SNS, DJ LES and DJ Epps. One of my most proud accomplishments was setting the goal in 2006 to be one of the artists selected to perform at the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. 100 years centennial celebration, I was selected and performed this year in Indianapolis, Indiana before a crowd of over 12 thousand. It was humbling to receive a platinum record for helping to push Artist, Bighookz record, moving over one million units!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
My most important lesson learned along the way is to be an ongoing learner, consistently practicing my craft and that providing excellent service makes a difference to your clients.
