Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashanti Montgomery.
Hi Ashanti, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I would always make everyone happy by expressing and gifting myself through my art, whether it be that I’m drawing, painting or cooking. Once I fell in love with being in the kitchen, the rest was history. I would always want to have my hands in any meal that was being prepared. As I got older, I wanted to sharpen my skills, so I decided to attend The Art Institute of Atlanta and Sign-Up for the Culinary Arts Program. However, after my 4th Quarter of arriving, I took an Artisan Bread course and quickly fell in love. I went to school the next day and switched my program over to Baking and Pastry. I started small, just making cakes and treats for family and friends, and over time, through word of mouth, Forget the Fork has grown into what it is now. I can’t express how grateful I am. I continue to hope that over time, I can continue to grow and expand my experience and craft.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride for me! Especially now with the pandemic and Inflation. However, that’s how I’ve learned over the years with those curves and bumps! I have learned that it’s okay to rest and take a break when needed, and not feel guilty for doing so. You can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s also okay to ask for help!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the Creator/ Owner and Pastry Chef of Forget The Fork Bakery! A Graduate from The Art Institute of Atlanta, with an Associate’s Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. I have been in the culinary industry for a decade now, specializing in custom cakes, and pastry treats! I’m most proud of my journey and seeing how far I’ve come in the past few years. I think what sets me apart is my drive, and how I am courageous in continuing to follow my dreams and not letting life get in the way or stopping my journey.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
To run a bakery business, I feel as though, you should always take risks! So you can stand out from the crowd. Otherwise, that business could be vulnerable. Taking risk is what keeps things fun and exciting. I’m always trying to learn new techniques and come up with new recipes to surprise my clients!
