Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Foster
Hi Ashley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
DJ Mz A Town
Born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, DJ Mz A Town is a worldwide Fleet DJ, promoter, and marketing visionary whose passion for music began even before birth. Introduced to a world of sound as her mother would place headphones on her belly to explore diverse musical genres, her lifelong love for music was inevitable.
By the age of 12, DJ Mz A Town was writing poetry that soon transformed into rap, laying the foundation for her creative journey. Despite financial challenges that limited her access to formal music education during her elementary and middle school years, she persevered and joined her first rap group at 13, adopting the name Aphrodite. Though stage fright eventually shifted her focus from performing to the business side of music, this pivot only deepened her commitment to the industry.
At 15, she launched her own promotional and marketing company, boldly reaching out to celebrities for interviews and exclusive drops in exchange for promotional work. By 17, her relentless drive took her on regular trips between Greenville and Atlanta, immersing herself in the vibrant scenes of both cities. In Atlanta, industry heavyweights like DJ Big Ed (aka DJ Mixing 101) recognized her determination, mentoring her and introducing her to influential figures such as DJ Senses and DJ Don Cannon. Embraced by the Atlanta music community with the nickname Mz A-Town, her reputation as an innovator continued to grow.
Back in Greenville, under the guidance of mentor Chauncey Simmons, she honed her business acumen and expanded her network. Weekdays were spent nurturing her roots in Greenville, while weekends saw her hitting the road to Atlanta, connecting with inspirational figures like Wendy Day, DJ Chuck T, and Askia Fountain at major entertainment events.
Today, DJ Mz A Town seamlessly blends creative artistry with savvy business strategies, inspiring audiences and fellow music entrepreneurs worldwide. Her journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the transformative power of music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
DJ Mz A Town’s journey has been anything but a smooth road—it’s been a path paved with challenges, setbacks, and hard-earned lessons. However, each struggle has fueled her determination and shaped her into the powerhouse she is today.
One of the earliest struggles she faced was financial hardship. Growing up with a single mother of three, affording musical instruments for school programs wasn’t an option. This meant missing out on formal music education, which could have discouraged her. Instead, she found alternative ways to immerse herself in music, using poetry and rap as her creative outlets.
Stage fright was another major obstacle. When she joined her first rap group at 13 and started gaining recognition, the pressure of performing live caused her to freeze on stage. This led her to step away from performing and instead focus on the business side of the industry. While it was a difficult shift, it ultimately opened new doors, leading her to create her own promotional and marketing company at just 15.
As a young entrepreneur in the music industry, earning respect wasn’t easy. Breaking into the male-dominated DJ and promotion scene required her to prove herself repeatedly. Many underestimated her abilities, but through persistence and networking, she gained the trust and mentorship of key figures like DJ Big Ed and Chauncey Simmons.
Balancing her time between Greenville and Atlanta also posed challenges. Constant travel, late nights, and the need to juggle networking with building her brand demanded sacrifice. She had to work twice as hard to establish herself in both cities, pushing past exhaustion and self-doubt.
Despite the hurdles, DJ Mz A Town remained unstoppable. Every obstacle became a lesson, every setback a stepping stone. Her journey is proof that resilience, passion, and a strong work ethic can turn struggles into success.
