Today we’d like to introduce you to Big Kane.
Hi Big Kane, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The first song that made me really like music was Mr. Big by 8BALL & MJG and that’s when I really just started liking different melodies. This was different from the music that was out at the time, and it was the only thing liked, the West Coast had that thang on lock. Me and my homeboys whether it was on the bus or in the hallway or on the playground, we would freestyle over beats and that’s how it all started. Also then that’s when I started collecting music and I got hip to Three 6 Mafia, Eazy-E, UGK and ghetto boys and also Tupac was a big influence. These artists got me to where I am today with telling my story within my music and my brand.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
From losing music to recording songs that I will never see again, to being put on mixtapes I never gave consent to be on, to having my music stolen and given it to others, it’s definitely been a hard road but yet I’m still at it and thriving. I can’t let it get me down. I just go harder.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a musical artist/rapper that specializes in pain music. I’m unapologetic when it comes to my craft. I’m my biggest critic and within my music, I’m going to give you street, real life, love, hurt and versatility, I keep my music authentic to my fan base. I want my fans to understand that I’ve been in similar situations as them, if not worse. It’s important that I stay relatable to and for them. I’ve changed it around for myself and if I can do it, so can they. I’m known for being the coolest of the cool. I love my coffee, good vibes, good energy and staying peaceful. I just want to be around good people that like to laugh and that has overcome what they’ve been through in their life and happen to be in a space where they don’t have to deal with it anymore.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come and one of the things that makes me proud the most is The God Brotherz project. The way it came together and not thinking we’d have the amount of support that we’ve had it’s been a blessing. It’s a project that wasn’t heavily promoted, no money marketing wise but our fans still listening, telling me their favorite songs and we really appreciate that. I go to Alaska every year for work and it’s love over there, they treat me like I’m Michael Jackson or something. A lot of them that I was just cool with, they’re fans now and rock with the music hard. When they see me, they throw the “Z” up, want pictures, sign their shirts, all that and I like it, it’s a beautiful feeling.
Musically I’m no different than the others, it’s just the way I say things but individually I stand out from where I’m from is they can’t go where I go, they’ve never been anywhere. Like people go to Atlanta or Florida and think that’s it. Like let’s go to Seattle, Colorado, Utah, Maine, Organ, New Mexico, Texas. I’ve been to every state in The United States but Hawaii. By me going different places, I know how to react and interact in different environments than most people where I’m from. This also gives me more substance to talk about because I be in the hood with these people when I’m traveling. I don’t be in a hotel, Air BnB all time, I like to see their life and feel their stories.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My relationship with the most high and my family structure means the most to me. We all know it’s a higher power, it’s just what avenue you want to take. I’m Rastafarian so my relationship comes from Africa. The messages I believe in come from Ethiopia. Whatever spirituality you get that will help you get your peace, go with that. There’s nothing more valuable than having be a part of a family. No one’s really going to ever understand you like family but ain’t nobody going to cross you more than family either, so it’s like a two-way street. One more thing, the people that support me in this journey means a lot to me too; Kay The Creative, ZMF and Killa B Entertainment. We locked in. -Big Kane
