Today we’d like to introduce you to BJ Orr.
BJ, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Columbia, SC, I moved to Atlanta after high school; hoping to carve out a path for life. I enrolled in The Art Institute of Atlanta, with a focus on Music and Video Production. This is where I discovered my passion for producing and directing. After honing my skills, I landed gigs at FOX 5, CNN, and Coca-Cola, before being laid off a few years in to my career. Rather than letting it defeat me, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Armed with $5000 worth of video equipment and a determination to never rely on a full-time job again; I embarked on a journey of independence.
From there, I immersed myself in online tutorials, learning everything I could about producing, editing, and videography. This led me to create my own content, documenting and interviewing up-and-coming rap artists in Atlanta. My work caught the attention of Netflix and Walmart, where my DVDs were distributed; ultimately propelling my business forward. As the times evolved, so did my business model, leading to the formation of B’Creative Media. Today, my team and I travel the country, producing original video content for corporations, agencies, networks and businesses, proving that with vision and determination, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I didn’t exactly have a roadmap for success growing up and was forced to learn things the hard way; in real-time. I had to do a serious overhaul of my mindset in order to allow myself to grow. We all experience challenges and setbacks in life. A key turning point for me was being laid off while going through a bankruptcy. Despite being head of a household, with 2 young kids a that time; I never let it bring me down. I just kept moving forward, taking 1 step at a time.
Days like these are hard, but know that it’s temporary; and if we just keep pushing forward we can overcome adversity. I told myself that I would do whatever i had to do to never be broke again. Sometimes we have to hit rock bottom to give us that motivation we need to truly pursue our goals. I’m grateful for those moments, as it taught me perseverance, humility, and patience.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself to be a visionary, with great business acumen. My company specializes in collaborating with Corporations, Agencies, Networks, and Nonprofits; to craft original video content tailored for various platforms including Broadcast, Social Media, and Internal communications. As the lead Producer, my responsibilities encompass the entire project lifecycle, from ideation to distribution. This entails conceptualizing ideas in alignment with client objectives, meticulously managing budgets and logistics, assembling skilled crews, and overseeing the production and post-production phases. Our overarching goal remains steadfast: to consistently deliver professional service and high-quality content while broadening our portfolio to encompass original productions destined for Film, TV, and streaming platforms.
At this juncture of my career, I find immense fulfillment in facilitating opportunities for burgeoning talents, particularly women and minorities within the industry. Recognizing the abundance of exceptional individuals in the Atlanta area seeking avenues for growth, I am actively engaged in a legacy project aimed at establishing a dedicated facility for Creators. This initiative will serve as both an incubator and collaborative space for students and emerging professionals, fostering skill development and industry integration. My goal is to leverage my influence to streamline the career trajectory of aspiring professionals, contributing to the continued vibrancy and inclusivity of our creative landscape.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Winning makes me happy. Winning meaning, being a great father, leader, business professional and mentor. Winning is maintaining a healthy lifestyle, being loved and supported by family and friends. Winning is executing and delivering on your promises and goals. Winning is waking up and being grateful for another opportunity to be the best version of yourself. Winning isn’t all about money; it’s about respect and integrity. Knowing we did the right thing even though no one was watching.
