Today we’d like to introduce you to Britt Allen.
Hi Britt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born in California, raised in Birmingham, AL by my Brazilian grandmother and mother. My passions are all visual arts! Acrylic painting, sculpting, photography, and painting murals. My influences are nature, along with different cultures and social justice.
Life has taught me to look beyond what I know to understand others’ life struggles and social injustices. I like to capture that in my painting, along with empower women specifically through my photography. I try to take them into another world where they can feel the power of being themselves. I love combining my love for art and photography into building sets.
Murals are my favorite because I love transforming spaces for businesses that help the community. To make an area more inviting and help others in the area feel inspired by where they live. My biggest achievements are being a full-time self-taught photographer, artist and muralist. While being a single mom of a sweet little girl. And proud member of the LGBTQIA community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been a rollercoaster of experience, there are seasons that I wonder if I should really be following my dreams at all! It’s a constant trying to prove myself to clients/businesses.
I think the hardest part is how a lot of people underestimate how much work goes into being an artist full-time.
Also, the idea that artists, photographers, and muralists are disposable. But we aren’t for the reason that not everyone is capable of making ideas come to life on a physical plain like artists/creatives do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer, muralist, and artist! I have been photographing since I was 13 years old. I’m proud of my constancy in that I’ve been doing this for 10-plus years and still trying to evolve. I feel like my style of photography is what I’m known for. Clients have called my work dreamy, moody, intimate, and retro.
What sets me apart from where I am is that I like to create sets. I like to have themed projects. My goal with photography is to encapsulate a sense of freedom from the social stigma that is put on women and people of the LGBTQIA community. With my painting, I like to do the same. I like to think I’m an activist through my artwork. My most recent accomplishment in doing that was I my work was put in an exhibition on the subject of pro-abortion where I had three pieces in. Whether it be about race inequality, abortion rights, women’s rights, or LGBTQIA’s inequality.
I’m not afraid to speak out against what I know is wrong in a way that creates healthy conversation or self-reflection. As for my mural work, I love being able to transform a space that helps small businesses thrive as they should. To have their vision for there hard-earned space come to life.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Number one, my daughter. I want her to see that she can truly follow her dreams and be successful. That’s why I do what I do. To give her a real-life example that she is capable of anything she puts her mind to.
Secondly, I’d say the truth, speaking it in whatever way I can. Whether through art or photography. Creating a space for the viewer in their mind to be able to ask themselves the hard questions. Or show a perspective that isn’t always shown.
Especially the importance of mental health during this very pinnacle time in our existence as humans.
