Life & Work with C. Farrar Designs by Chelcey Farrar

Today we’d like to introduce you to C. Farrar Designs by Chelcey Farrar.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to where I am now was a whirlwind, but I wouldn’t change one part of my story. I played basketball through college and always dreamed of making it to the professional level. This dream was cut short due to multiple knee surgeries, but I always had a plan b set in place (thanks to my parents’ advice). I began doing graphic and web design when I was a junior in high school and have had a passion for it ever since. Once I realized that basketball wasn’t going to be my career, I quickly shifted gears and began focusing on how to turn my second passion into profit. The journey has been far from glorious, but nothing worth having comes easy and I’m so thankful for where I am now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. The road to entrepreneurship was as rocky as it could get. After college, I was staying up for days at a time, designing and printing shirts from my home, creating $40 party flyers and $100 websites. But this was getting me nowhere fast, people were taking advantage of my craft.

I had to do something different, So I got a job as an operations manager at a franchise print shop. This job was great for about a year when I realized it was time for me to put that energy into building my own business. So, I quit my 9-5 in 2017. I knew it was going to be a challenging journey, but I didn’t realize how rough the road was really going to get.

My clientele was very inconsistent and many would challenge my pricing. This along with the workload I had to take on to keep up with the cost of living was taking a major toll on my well-being. However, despite all the lows, I remained determined, stayed focused, created a lane of my own, and the rest is HERstory.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to call C. Farrar Designs a one-stop shop. I create everything from flyers, banners, and business cards, to fully-developed websites and mobile apps. I am most proud of my resilience and I take pride in being completely self-taught and building a small team that has helped me bring all my wonderful clients’ visions to life. C. Farrar Designs has allowed me to work with so many amazing and inspiring business owners, musicians, realtors, chefs, trainers, photographers, and many more creatives and entrepreneurs. Working with such a wide variety of individuals has taught me so much and helped me grow into the creative I am today.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I’m completely self-taught. I don’t have any formal training in graphics or web design. I’ve spent years developing my craft and attending YouTube university! It’s an accomplishment that I’m most proud of and continuing to grow every day.
