Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Arias
Hi Carolina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my legal training as a receptionist at a boutique law firm while pursuing my Bachelor of Science at Kennesaw State University. That experience sparked my passion for immigration and personal injury law, two areas that resonate deeply with me. When my mother was struck by a vehicle while cycling, she faced overwhelming challenges with the legal system and language barriers. My father, a two-time Olympian cyclist, moved to the U.S. seeking better opportunities for our family. These personal experiences inspired me to build a career focused on making a meaningful difference for others facing similar challenges in both immigration and personal injury.
In my first year at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, I founded United Voices Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing legal services, education, and resources to underserved communities. This work has always been close to my heart and remains central to my mission. It has been a privilege to use my personal experiences and formal education to support migrants and mentor first-generation students on their journeys.
I’ve also gained valuable experience at firms like Starrett & Harris Law, nonprofits like the Southern Poverty Law Center, and international law firms like Organización Benjamin Herrera. Throughout my journey, my driving force has been the desire to positively impact others—especially those who need it most.
My efforts have been recognized with the Clinical Legal Education Award and the Islamic Circle of North America Community Service Award. In 2022, I was honored with the Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears Pro Bono Award by Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most meaningful journeys, mine has had its challenges. One of the biggest struggles was balancing school, work, and the demands of founding a nonprofit, all while navigating my own immigrant experience. There were moments of doubt, but those setbacks only fueled my determination to keep pushing forward.
As a first-generation college graduate, I had to figure things out on my own, from understanding the complexities of higher education to finding my way in the legal field. Building United Voices Foundation from the ground up was a challenge—managing a team, securing funding, and meeting the overwhelming needs of the community.
Another ongoing challenge has been maintaining a balance between my work with the migrant community and my personal life. Juggling all these roles can be overwhelming, but every obstacle has taught me valuable lessons and helped me grow. Despite the roadblocks, my passion for making a difference in people’s lives has always kept me moving forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work focuses on advocating for those who often don’t have a voice, particularly within immigrant community. At United Voices Foundation, we serve migrant communities across races, creeds, and ethnicities, ensuring that all migrants and first-generation students have the support they need.
What I’m most proud of is founding United Voices Foundation during my first year of law school. It started as a small nonprofit, but it has grown into an organization that touches the lives of countless individuals who might otherwise fall through the cracks. Being able to use both my personal experiences as a Colombian immigrant and my formal education to give back in this way is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is the personal connection I have with the people I serve. I’ve lived the immigrant experience, so I understand the challenges firsthand. I’ve walked the same path as many of the people I advocate for, and that perspective helps me approach each case with empathy, determination, and a deep sense of responsibility. My passion for this work is what drives me to continue making a difference in the lives of those I serve.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something people might not know about me is how much I enjoy exploring passions beyond my legal work. I’m deeply drawn to philosophy and anthropology because they offer unique perspectives on life and human nature. Poetry is another love of mine—it’s a creative outlet that helps me process my thoughts and feelings. And then there’s cycling, which not only keeps me active but also connects me to my roots. All of these interests help me stay balanced and grounded, especially when things get hectic with work and running the nonprofit.
