Life & Work with Clara Potts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Potts.

Clara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always thought I would become a nurse but as I got older, I was starting to realize that Hair is what I enjoyed doing. I remember I was 15 years old and I would do my sister’s and mom’s hair and let them be my models. Braiding is what I would practice doing all the time. I started getting clients from them seeing my mom and sister hair which became my first business at 15 and I would do hair every weekend to make money to help my mom and buy things I needed for school that I did not want to ask my mom to buy because she was a single mom of seven kids. Once I decided that hair was what I wanted to do then I decided to go to hair school to learn more and become a professional Hairstyles. I moved to Georgia a year after graduating from Cosmetology school.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, It has not been a smooth road. I would always tell myself if it was easy then I did not want it. I wanted to work for everything because I never wanted anyone to say it was handed to me. when I first moved to Georgia in 2015, I decided I was going to be a full-time Entrepreneur. It was so hard because I was starting all over without any clientele. I did not have an Instagram or anything at the time so when I would go to salons to try to work, they would want you to have an Instagram a big following. It could be because I was trying to work with some of the best hairstylists who work I loved. I finally found a salon that someone referred to me. I was able to build my clientele then eventually able to own my salon Bossy Beauty Bar.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
It has always been my passion to do hair with a specialty in Natural Hair, Braids, and weaves. I love the way the hair looks, moves and feels, therefore my main goal is healthy hair no matter what styles my clients decide to get done. I never put myself in a box and decided that this is all I wanted to do in this industry. I wanted to be able to do whatever my clients decided they wanted to get done that day so I made sure when they come to my salon, they can receive any style they would like to get done. So I continue to learn everyday because there is always room for improvement in anything you decide you want to do.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned was to never give up on your dreams or goals. Everyone will not see your vision and everyone cannot go with you. It will be good and bad days but do not let the bad stop you from dreaming big and going after everything you want in life. Always remember what God has plan for me will not always be visual.
