Today we’d like to introduce you to Cortney Hendrix.
Hi Cortney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started my senior year of high school. My Mom did my makeup for prom and I was shock. She never told me she could do makeup. It really started from that moment on. After high school, I went to college at Ogeechee Tech to become a Veterinary Technician. I’ve always loved animals since I was a little girl. During these times I’m learning and perfecting my craft with makeup. One day I went to class and half the class was crying because vech tech was hard. I decided then to drop the program and go to Esthetician School. I’ve always had trouble with my skin as a little girl. I can remember going to the dermatologist consistently. So going to Esthetician School was the best decision I’ve ever made. I wanted to learn more about the skin and how to treat the skin. As well as showing my clients the importance of skincare and makeup. A lot of people don’t realize that skin plays a role into how the makeup will look on the face. This is why I like to incorporate skin into makeup.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not to be honest and still in my process but with The Lord guiding me. When I got into Esthetician School I found out I was pregnant with our son Nicholas. At this time I’m going to school full time, working full time, and pregnant the whole entire time. I look back at that and I knew it was God’s grace. Sometimes I can’t believe I did all of that while pregnant and graduated with honors. When my classmates went to state boards I couldn’t because I was about to have our son. When Nicholas came I dropped everything to be a stay-at-home Mom. I didn’t work for a year and it was hard. I was so used of being on go and moving like I wanted too. I was ready to get back on my feet and I started to work at this place called Brow Baby. I wasn’t licensed but in the process of getting them. All I could do there was thread eyebrows which was therapeutic and do makeup.
I finally ended up getting licensed and started working at ULTA Beauty. That’s when I got into facials and started promoting myself. Each client I will make videos and I promoted myself consistently. Before I knew it I had people coming from Savannah Ga, Pooler Ga, Augusta Ga, and my home town Millen Ga. I was #2 in our district making sales. Then covid hit and I was at square one once again. ULTA Beauty wasn’t bringing the skin bar back and they wanted me to start waxing with them and I turned down the offer. I didn’t want to wax brows all day I told myself if I’m going to wax I might as well learn how to do Brazilians. I ended up getting a job at Brazil where we specialize in using hard wax. So not only do I have a love for makeup and skin but also being a wax tech.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As of now, I work at Brazils full-time. We use medical-grade equipment and sheets. Our hard wax has been perfected to allow hair to be removed gently and easily. I do Brazilians to full body services. My time off from Brazils I still do weddings and skin consultations. A lot of my bridal clients also have me to get their skin right for their wedding day. When I work with my bride we do bridal and skin consultations. I let my bride know the products and steps she needs to take to get her skin right. So when wedding day comes, the makeup will be so flawless on the face. I love the art of my craft and at the end of the day, I enjoy my clients. Whether it’s makeup, facials, or waxing. I’m thankful for all of my clients.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Trust God through it all and have faith. Your belief will determine your steps. It took me a very long time to really give The Lord the pen to my life and let Him write my story. If I don’t have nothing else I have my faith and I know that God will move on my behalf. I have so much in store and this is only the beginning for me.
Psalm 46:5 God is within her, she will not fall.
