Life & Work with Dalton Rice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalton Rice.

Dalton Rice

Hi Dalton, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started as a SCAD student, very quickly fell in love with photography and the Georgia area. I started working as an assistant for some local photographers and have started to get my own client base. I started off shooting analog film, that’s really what got me to fall in love with photography. The experience and end result is something you can’t achieve in digital photography. Now most of my clients are for digital photo or video work, but I still try to have that film-like experience and outcome on everything I shoot.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been smooth. With any freelance job, consistency is hard. I sometimes don’t know where or when my next job will be. Mentally it can be hard as you always wonder if people are seeing your work and did they enjoy working with you. Fortunately, I have been starting to get busier as of late, and with the photo industry so much is word of mouth that I hope and think that I am starting to get a good name for myself out there.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in portraiture. Most of my current work is with weddings. I really enjoy photographing people’s special days. The stories are always so intimate, and it allows me to connect with people and still do the work I love on a regular basis. I think what sets me apart from others is that I try to provide an all-inclusive experience. I tailor the day to the client and really try to be as flexible to get whatever the client wants for them. I also think that on a creative level, my photos can tell stories really well and have that analog film feel to them.

How do you define success?
I define success for myself as being able to be happy. If I am happy with what I am doing, then I feel successful. Right now, working as a freelance photographer and videographer is what makes me happy and makes me feel successful.
