Life & Work with Daren Cheng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daren Cheng.

Daren Cheng

Hi Daren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I was passionate about art and practiced drawing. But as I grew up, I realized that I didn’t have a strong desire to express myself, so for a while, I was confused until I learned about design and the work of famous designers and found what I wanted to work towards! I think I am very good at observing people and communicating with them. It wasn’t until I was actually studying design that I realized that observation and interviews are an integral part of design. Designing for the real world has never been something I counted on! That’s why I try my best to experience the real world, and trying different and new things is my source of creativity. I chose to study abroad for the same reason because being in an unfamiliar land brings me more exciting experiences and opportunities. Although I am still new in the design industry, I think design is my only thing, and I will keep learning, exploring, and experiencing it in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think I’ve had it all together, but it’s not a bumpy ride. Of course, I encountered various problems in a foreign country, such as language communication problems, cultural integration problems, and self-understanding problems. There may be a lot of minor difficulties at work or with coworkers. But I don’t think these are enough to call them difficulties. My faith may continue to support me. Because I am a Buddhist, I think about many things more openly. Perhaps the question that keeps nagging me is how to make choices I will not regret.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a UX designer. I think having a different cultural background makes me more memorable. And I’m very passionate about folklore, so maybe I’ll always have some niche, unique, and crazy ideas coming out. And because of my broad range of hobbies, I can offer more different perspectives and solutions.

What does success mean to you?
I think success is multidimensional: financial, social status, relationships, work, etc. So, success to me is holistic, and I would say the more freedom you have, the more successful you are.
