Life & Work with Dashauna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dashauna.

Hi Dashauna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
If I had to sum up how I got to where I am, I would say motivation, persistence, consistency, having a great support system and my discomfort with feeling stagnant are just a few things that got me here. Growing up I always had a love for hair, but being a Sagittarius played a huge part in my focus. One week I wanted to do hair then the next week I was starting a clothing line. Once I planned to move to Atlanta, I told myself I had to focus on accomplishing one thing and I’d keep working on that. I enrolled in cosmetology school and within that year I rekindled with my love for hair.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not. It’s been a rollercoaster, sometimes it feels like I’m under attack lol. The struggles just depended on the day. Some days I struggled mentally, other days financially and some physically. Overtime I’ve learned everything is a mind thing. If you think positive, that’s what you’ll attract & vice versa.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a fairly new hairstylist in Atlanta. I’m mostly proud of coming to Atlanta, completing school & staying consistent. Nobody talks about how hard it is to move to another state with no family or friends. I specialize in making woman feel dope, hence the name Dope Mane Essentials. The difference between me & every other hairstylist is QUALITY over quantity. For example, I want to normalize shampooing clients for no extra charge. I am a strong believer in taking care of your real hair, even if you plan on wearing wigs all year round.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
As I said earlier, the Sagittarius in me gets distracted so easily it’s hard to stay consistent but every morning I repeat Coach Stormy’s affirmations on Apple Music & then I say my own personal affirmations. Meditation, working out & fasting also help me mentally get back on track.
