Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Brown.
Hi Dee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started in Mississippi at Mississippi State University as an electrical engineer major, later learning how to make music, photography, production, and videography.
Through school I needed a second income to provide for myself so I picked up those talents for financial purposes.
Through networking and time, I became one of Mississippi’s most desired artists due to my flamboyant and creative talent shows and open mics. My desire to be an artist grew so I moved to Atlanta July 2018 with no home. I went through a lot of trials after my move but it was all worth it.
Now I make promotional videos for entrepreneurs and businesses full time.
I have a home/studio here in Atlanta for photography and I direct and produce my own music and music videos.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first struggle was finding somewhere to stay. I met a few scam artists who claimed I could live in a room with them. It turned out they were desperate realtors who couldn’t sell their home. They would let me stay for a week after taking my month’s worth of rent, then kick me out with a sympathetic excuse. I’ve had several jobs like Chipotle, Walmart, Home Depot IT Dept, temp jobs, and MassMutual that I quit for different reasons. Each reason I left dealt with my moral views on people and ethics in a workplace.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known as a photographer to most people because that’s how I make my money and introduce myself. Others know me through my music or both.
My talent shows made a big buzz in Mississippi so it carried over to Atlanta when I moved.
I’m personally proud of an upcoming album I have on the way called “Mississipimpin”. It explains the mental battles I have leaving my home for Atlanta. All of my music is a direct conduit to my life.
What sets me apart is I am the music label. I can make your beat (instrumental), record artists, film their videos, provide professional photos, and promote any artist I want without help from the “machine” or big labels. I can do it all in the music world.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t give up. Just don’t give up. It’s rough out here especially when you’re an artist. Atlanta is a hard place to figure out but when you do, you’ll be fine. Just don’t quit. Don’t act like you who want to be, be who you want to be.
