Life & Work with De’Von Forbes

Today we’d like to introduce you to De’Von Forbes.

Hi De’Von, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of ten, I started to pick up my pencils and write poetry. Initially, I was just doing it for the fun of simply rhyming words but eventually, I was able to somewhat tap into my emotions and compose genuine feelings onto paper. By 9th grade, I was making money by selling personalized poems for Valentine’s Day. At that point, I started crushing really hard on this guy. He always wanted me to write poems for his girlfriend and I did. But what he didn’t know is that those poems were about him. Eventually, I started getting more into music and I realized that I can put harmonies and music to my poems. That’s when I started my path in songwriting. I was able to evoke emotions, even more, when I discovered the craft. When I graduated high school (Riverdale) and started college (Columbus State) I was really wanting to study veterinary medicine. That didn’t work out for me as it was way too demanding and I wasn’t able to hang. After talking to my school counselor, she told me that I should try theatre since I was such a character. So I took her advice and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was able to combine my love for writing with my then new love of acting and that’s what molded me into the creative I am today!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a creative has always been a hot topic on my family. They wanted me to be a basketball star, a doctor and pledge a fraternity when I wanted none of that. In my teen years, I was struggling to come to terms with my sexuality while tryna to get through my ugly phase and I felt alone. That feeling, in retrospect, was the driving force for me to pierce through naysayers and bullies. So no, it has been far from a smooth road to get where I am today but honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a writer at heart! I love conveying subjects and situations into scripts, music and poetry. The project that has made me the proudest is a web series I developed about two years ago called “Frenergy”. Frenergy is my baby! Writing that show allowed me to insert specific dialogue and moments in my personal life and bring them to life. That show has also afforded me some lifelong friendships with some extremely talented people.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, the film industry will be booming more than ever and I want a piece of the pie.
