Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Torres.
Hi Diego, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Nuestra Creación back in 2019 with my friend Patricia Hernandez. I’ve lived in Atlanta for over five years but have been in Georgia my whole life. I found my way in Atlanta thanks to the many local community events that happen all over.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A smooth road would be so boring. Of course, there were struggles especially when no one knows your name. Once I became more grounded and thanks to some job opportunities I received my network grew.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I live off being a Social Media Strategist but what I do in Atlanta is help curate an annual Latine Art Exhibit every Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month. A project Patricia and I have done for the past four years. We showcase unknown Latine artists local to Atlanta with the hope of amplifying them to broader audiences.
Atlanta has so many talented artists and is wildly diverse (in many ways) yet the majority of art seen all over Atlanta is from the same handful of artists. There are so many other community groups organizing incredible events and we just wanted to focus on the Latine niche. Nuestra gente, which in itself is incredibly diverse. We want the rest of Atlanta to see them. To see us.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Despite the restrictions, we still were able to organize our art exhibition back in 2020. In the middle of it all. So all these events are possible with the necessary precautions of course. Our exhibit that year was outdoor, with a mask requirement, and we asked people to just stick to their “pods” while also limiting the number of people in the space.
It was a beautiful night and much needed for many of us. So that’s the biggest takeaway.
