Life & Work with DJ JayOhh

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ JayOhh.

Hi DJ JayOhh, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small-town Albany, NY, or “the 518” as most people know it as. I started Djing at 12 years old, I used virtual DJ Pro with just a mouse and keyboard before my mother surprised me with my first DJ controller as an early gift for my 12th birthday it was like a dream come true, I remember using a small windows laptop I believe it was an ACER, I would donate my Djing skills for different events around the 518 and for my family members to gain more djing gigs. After I got my name up there, I was being booked for a party or event almost every weekend! I felt so popular and so professionally busy that I knew this DJing thing would work out for me so my next step was branding! I saved up cash to upgrade & replace my windows laptop for a MacBook Pro. I also bought a custom skin to promote my social media accounts at every event! This led to me becoming popular in my city as “the youngest DJ in the 518” I got that name from a reggae dj, dance, & promo group I joined formally known as “Maadrass”) I ended up being booked for clubs at only 15-16 years old, I was now handling adult crowds! This boosted my exposure and helped build a bigger name for myself. Having the chance to get booked for adult clubs and having security protect you like the big-time celebrities do took a lot of getting used to. So, with all the publicity and fame around my city I threw a huge party for my 16th birthday it was crazy the city tried so hard to stop the party from happening but I wasn’t having that it was my birthday and I had the whole city come out to celebrate it with me I couldn’t let them down. I DJ-ed pretty much every weekend, I always had my own cash I would even sneak out to DJ for after-hour spots during the school week to make extra cash out in Schenectady I was young I still had the energy to be up at from 12 am and ready for school by 7 am somehow. Around 18-19, I was getting booked for concerts by an agency known as “ALittleBookingAgency” they had me do shows for artists like A-Boogie Wit Tha Hoodie, Don Q, Saweetie, then Smoke Purp & Chief Keef. My girlfriend at the time was having my first son so I spent a lot of time finding extra gigs and networking with other DJs or promoters to collaborate on events with them. Around this time, I started doing my own parties & artist showcases for upcoming artists in “the 518”. These same artist I also grew up with most of them it was cool to see their true energy and potential. Everybody has a name now around my city because the support and the love is genuine there. The best part about being a DJ is being in control of the crowd it’s the best feeling when you have a solid crowd who rocks with you because those same people wouldn’t hesitate to come to another event if they see your name on there. The past couple years the world has been dealing with the Covid-19 quarantine, this outbreak shut down a lot of business opportunities for me. At the start of the quarantine, I was worried about what would happen if this quarantine never ends and we all have to stay locked in our houses forever. The Covid-19 quarantine killed the party vibe in Upstate NY, no one wanted to catch the virus. I then came together with my former manager and his associates who had opened a small venue in Albany NY, we all wanted to make money we were going to just start a merch business but instead, I suggested since the venue was big enough, we can do parties after hours and showcases there! We all had to do something to make some money so we put together a team of promoters DJs and security. This helped us get the hottest after hour spot of summer 2020 the more we did events and after-hours the more people came. I even had my celebrity DJ friends hitting me up to come through to DJ just because they haven’t turnt up in so long so this helped me collab with bigger names and helped out with building my image. Soon the city started hearing about our venue and they started to intervene, we were forced to shut it down or operate only on specific hours, or else the police would come to shut it down.at this point, everyone was disappointed and annoyed that they city didn’t want to see us partying having a good time. I then moved here to Atlanta, GA in September 2020 because things were at a standstill back home but I knew Atlanta still had clubs open so I networked with the ATL promoters on social media, and before even getting off the plane I had a gig that Wednesday night at a place called “Knockouts Bar & Lounge” in College Park. I got my name up by doing showcases there every Wednesday networking with the different artists who performed every week and also from the private parties the promoters would book me for throughout the week. I always had a spot to DJ since I’ve came to Atlanta with my foot already in the door. So far, I’ve been booked at so many different clubs in Atlanta such as KOD, Magic City, Curfew, Club V, Flex Lounge, Graffiti Lounge, GlowBar, 360 Lounge, Osaka Lounge, & More. I love it here in Atlanta the money is great here and very consistent, people pay me what I charge and aren’t ever mad about my price. Atlanta showed so much love to me since I moved here and I know this is where I want to be!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all everyone has their obstacles and hedges they need to get over sometimes there are slow months sometimes there are fast months you just have the be consistent and go through the phases because it’s life you cannot change what already happened. Some of my struggles during my Dj career would be 1) the time I woke up to a black screen on my MacBook pro! It would turn on but the screen wouldn’t show anything. I had to buy a brand-new laptop luckily, I’m great with computers & electronics so I didn’t lose any of my data because I kept the hard drive which had all of my music on there. 2) the one time back home (the 518) I encountered a robber/killer, I guess he wanted to rob me or kill me but it didn’t go as planned. As I sat in my car some random guy who must have been watching my moves came up to my car cocking his gun back, I saw him through my mirrors, I put the car in drive, ducked, and sped off he shot the car then next thing you know I hit a car parked in front of me and then my car flipped on its side. I thought I was done for, then the car flipped back on its four wheels and I peeled off got as far away as I could because I couldn’t access any gun to fight him off. This car accident changed my life, my spine was injured my nose was broken, and gashed open. I felt like it was just the devil so after that, I changed my ways, I wanted to stay positive after that. Moral of the story no matter what everyone has their ups & downs.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a DJ, I specialize in being fashionable, I am great with music and I also have some good scratching skills. I am known for being “the youngest” like being the youngest dj djing in the club. I am most proud for my son Yaan who is 2 yrs. old at this time he’s the best thing that ever happened to me! What sets me apart from everyone else is that I am very humble and about business, I’m not looking for friendships I’m looking for opportunities and business connections, I want consistent reliable people around me and I keep things strictly business when it’s time to work.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a popular kid in school, I would make funny videos and pictures and post them on the internet and go viral a lot.
