Today we’d like to introduce you to Donn Chii.
Hi Donn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started playing bass at the age of 14. From then, I played in various local bands throughout high school and some of college. After about ten years, most of the projects/bands I was playing in weren’t working out. I knew that if I really wanted to do music, I was gonna have to do it myself. So in 2015, I started rapping under the name DonnCham. After releasing couple of albums, I changed my name to Donn Chii to match more of myself and my brand. Since 2018, I’ve released two albums, three EP’s and a few singles.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Confidence has definitely been one of those struggles. It’s hard to believe in yourself all the way through this music thing. It’s important to keep feeding yourself positivity and surround yourself with good energy to keep going. Also, financial literacy. If I had known how to invest money in my career years ago, I’d probably be a lot further than I am now but everything comes with time. I feel if a lot of musicians knew how to use their funding to propel their music career, they wouldn’t quite so quickly.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to take all the skills I learned in school/bands and apply it to my own music. Because of that, I have a very mixed genre style. No two songs sound the same in my library. It’s something I definitely take pride in because I’d like to be a pioneer of music by inventing new styles and sounds. I’m known for adding guitars in most of my music along with ambient “spacey” sounds. I always make sure my drums are banging to give that hip-hop element to my songs and allow me to flow over the track.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I remember hearing my cousin rap for the first time and thinking I had never seen anybody in our family do music, so in a way he inspired me. It’s kind of ironic because he stopped then I started and now we both rap together, haha.
