Life & Work with Dr. Quinita Morrow

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Quinita Morrow.

Dr. Quinita Morrow

Hi Dr. Morrow, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Seventeen years ago marked the beginning of my journey in teaching. Surprisingly, what started as a short-term plan of 1-2 years became my true passion.

Initially, my career trajectory didn’t include education, having obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, a Master’s Degree in Management and Human Resources, and a Doctorate in Business Administration. As a rookie educator, I lacked formal training in teaching, but I pursued additional courses through an unconventional path, earning my Teacher Certification via Georgia TAPP (Teacher Alternative Preparation Program).

Becoming a “highly qualified” teacher transformed my perspective—teaching ceased being merely a job; it became an unwavering love. My mantra is simple: there’s never a dull moment in my classroom. My students, my world, infuse each day with vitality. Teaching Marketing amplifies this dynamism; our exchanges constantly stream engaging conversations.

My teaching philosophy centers on guest speakers. Their diverse narratives, echoing my lessons, inject a unique vibrancy into our classroom. Hearing firsthand experiences from individuals living the realities my students aspire to is profoundly impactful. Be it the local bakery owner, a publicist, or a renowned athlete or artist, each speaker brings a distinct narrative, enriching our learning journey.

Some may label me the “celebrity teacher” for my fondness of celebrity guests, but my foremost priority lies in accommodating my students’ preferences. Roughly six years ago, I launched a guest speaker series, starting with one speaker annually and gradually expanding to a daily occurrence, except Fridays, due to our current schedule. While it poses logistical challenges, each day brings a new adventure eagerly embraced by my enthusiastic students.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Teaching is an ever-evolving journey filled with daily challenges. Since integrating weekly guest speakers into my classroom, I’ve encountered many hurdles. Initially, my students may have perceived it as effortless, but I’m transparent about the behind-the-scenes efforts required. I share with them the meticulous preparation involved, like sending out numerous emails each Monday, often receiving minimal responses. Despite the setbacks, I emphasize the significance of those few positive replies to my students.

Maintaining transparency, I inform them when scheduling conflicts arise or speakers unexpectedly cancel. I stress the inevitability of such occurrences, fostering a culture of understanding and resilience. Their unwavering support fuels my determination to persevere. While some requested speakers remain elusive, my students’ faith in possibilities drives me to balance realism with optimism.

Disappointing my students is something I strive to avoid, as their anticipation for guest speakers is palpable. Each day brings its challenges, yet it also presents new growth opportunities. Thus, I continue to forge ahead, embracing each obstacle as part of the journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach Marketing at Alcovy High School in Covington, GA, and what truly makes me proud to be a part of this community are my students. They are amazing, and their dedication, behavior, and aspirations inspire me. What distinguishes my approach as an educator is my commitment to bringing in guest speakers to engage with my students.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to host diverse guests, including TI, DC Young Fly, De’arra Taylor, Vena, Desi Banks, Dikembe Mutombo, and many more. This platform has been a tremendous blessing. Given that my marketing class is nontraditional, every school year, week, and day presents a fresh opportunity for surprises in Dr. Morrow’s Marketing Class.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My favorite aspect of our city is undoubtedly our beloved Atlanta Hawks! Their presence brings excitement and energy to our community, and as a devoted fan, I revel in every moment. The diversity of our people and the culinary scene here are equally delightful.

Atlanta offers an unparalleled variety of cuisines that cater to every taste bud. It’s truly a city that has it all, with endless possibilities and opportunities. However, the one downside is the infamous traffic congestion, which can be quite a hassle.
