Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Combs.
Hi Elizabeth, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started back in 2020 when I was 15 years old. I was only a freshman in high school but I knew I had to start thinking about how I would afford college since I come from a low income, single parent, immigrant household.
At the time my mom was against me getting a job because she wanted me to focus on my studies even though I had a perfect GPA.
So, I found a loop hole. I would become my own boss and make my own money. I knew I wanted my artistic skills to shine through my business so eventually I landed on the idea of press on nails. I spent my entire summer preparing, designing, and budgeting for my brand until finally ecnails was born.
One of my main focuses when starting the business was affordability. As I mentioned, I come from a low income household so I wanted people that came from similar backgrounds to be able to afford my nails.
I put in the work, built my business on my own from the ground up, and I did end up going to my first pick University.
Now that I’m in college I still maintain my business. It’s more of a side hustle now as I’ve picked up two other part time jobs.
My brand has been a great outlet for me to express my artistic skills.
I’ve also learned a lot about consistency, determination, and business along the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If you’re an impatient person, I would say the journey was tough. However, I’m extremely patient so I don’t think I would describe my journey as a struggle. Of course there were ups and downs. My first entire year of having my business open, I only got one sale. But I didn’t let that deter me. In fact I don’t know why I wasn’t more discouraged due to that. I simply wasn’t. I just kept designing nails and pushing my art out to the world until finally I started getting noticed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner of a press on nail business. I do everything from marketing, designing, creating, to customer service.
I wouldn’t say I’m known for a certain style. My most popular set is a “Custom Set”, which is just whatever my client requests for me to make. I have done an extremely wide range of designs from a simple plain nail to detailed character art.
I am most proud of the fact that I created a business and community from nothing.
What sets me apart from others is my prices, response time, my artistic capabilities, and my advertising.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I honestly don’t think luck had any role to play in my business. It was just straight determination (even stubbornness). For years I was posting my work on my social medias every single day, multiple times a day. If you do that long enough, you’ll inevitably build something.
