Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmy Law.
Hi Emmy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Gainesville, GA. I played a lot of sports as a kid and always took piano lessons whenever I had time. I sang in the chorus at school but didn’t write my first song until the end of college. I majored in music education at the University of North Georgia, and when I graduated, I realized I wanted to do something with music…and teaching wasn’t quite it. I spent a few years teaching music lessons after college and then moved to Atlanta, GA to pursue music. While living there, I learned how to play with a band, I got rid of my stage fright (for the most part), and wrote songs. I’m so thankful for those years and absolutely wouldn’t be where I am without them. I knew in my spirit that it was time to move on from Atlanta, and I’m so thankful to be in Nashville now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! It seems everything I’ve learned I’ve had to learn through mistakes and corrections. In Gainesville and even Atlanta I didn’t have many people in my life who were actually pursuing music….so I was trying things all over the place. Investing in things not worth my time or money, and some things I invested in were scams. I’ve definitely lost some money to scams – so many sharks in the water. It’s also always been a struggle to keep paying the bills while also pursuing music, but who doesn’t struggle with that? It’s all been a fun learning experience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a folk / folk pop singer=songwriter. I stream my music on Twitch on Sundays and Mondays and it’s always a great time. We call ourselves the EmLaws – we celebrate originals and covers, and we do life together. My Twitch community has inspired me probably way more than I’ve inspired them!
This year, I’m focusing on the songs and my main goal is simply to reach people with them. One of the things I’m most proud of is my progression as a songwriter – I’ve got a long way to go, but I’ve come such a long way and I’m so thankful for that. I think my singing voice / singing style sets me apart from others. I really think that I’ve found my singing voice and I can’t tell you how amazing that feels. It doesn’t matter that I can’t sing super high or do crazy runs…I do what I do and it feels good.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love listening to Tim Keller messages – they’re always very deep and thought-provoking. I love a few podcasts that I won’t mention here, haha. Pat Pattinson has a few books on songwriting that have really helped me over the years. The Bible will always be a steadfast source of truth and guidance for me.
