Today we’d like to introduce you to Geoffrey Boyd from Outdoors With Geoff.
Hi Geoffrey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started getting into barbecue in 2011. I had to relocate to St Louis for work and it was a pretty high stress job. I always loved cooking and I decided to get a little $17 grill from Walmart so that I could cook on my balcony while I enjoyed a beer. It wasn’t much, but I started to learn how to create some really great barbecue with that grill. Ribs, chicken, steaks and other various items always came off great.
When I moved to the Atlanta area in 2013, I invested in a larger offset smoker which taught me how to manage a fire and handle much larger cooks. I started then to focus on different flavor profiles and was determined that I was going to make barbecue where everything wasn’t covered in a red barbecue sauce, nothing against it, cause I do use it. I just like to explore different flavor profiles and options.
So 2020 came around and the Covid-19 Pandemic was among us and along with doing some house projects, I decided to start Outdoors With Geoff on YouTube. I started recording my cooks and getting them out there for people to see and I found that my style resonated with my audience because I focus on teaching and detailing the cook from start to finish so one can follow along at home. I also started the videos to show people that Barbecue isn’t that hard. It’s just time, temperature and fun.
We have seen great growth in subscribers and across other social media formats in 2021 in particular. In the end, it is always about the Barbecue. I firmly believe that Barbecue is a Culture. Its not just putting something on the grill. There is a process to everything and there are Pitmasters who have passed these teachings down for generations. It is part of my job to keep spreading this craft.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it has been a smooth operation. I started recording with an iPhone 6 and I didn’t even use a tripod. I just put the phone on the fence post and hit record. I searched online and picked up some editing tips and spoke with a few people in production and started to get equipment a little at a time and focused on making each project better than the last. It’s to the point now to where I love the editing and the camera work. This helped me see measurable change over time in my media work.
I also had to create a format that worked for me. In the beginning, I filmed alone and I had to work my format around that and also make sure that I could connect with my viewers. So I decided to do an intro, record a voiceover of the cook and do a review and taste test at the end to maintain that personal connection and also not miss any steps while I focus on cooking.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Over the past eighteen years, I’ve dealt in managing big box operations and leading teams of 200 plus people while managing sales and budgets exceeding $100 Million annually and being accountable for operations and the profit and loss statement. I like teaching and explaining things so it can get down to the lowest common denominator and everyone has an understanding of what we are doing and why. We will get it done together.
How do you define success?
Success is accomplishing the goals you set forth while making sure to keep true to your craft and having fun at the same time. You define the goals you set. Make sure they are attainable and sustainable.
