Today we’d like to introduce you to Gia Glass.
Hi Gia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My freshman year of high school, I was into hair, but natural hair. The following year I started to get into the weave. I got my hair done for the first time and after that I needed my hair done again but I couldn’t afford it at the time. I started to get on youtube and watching videos and trying to apply what I learned. After a while, I started to get better with my craft and taking it a little more seriously. My closet friend at the time asked me to do her hair and it came out good for it to be my first time. After that, it’s kind of like things blew up for me. I started to gain more clientele and I was able to quit my 9-5 at Mcdonald’s because hair started to bring in enough money for me. From there it became all about branding and marketing, and today I am still teaching myself new things to help my business grow. I am self-taught with everything I do and all the knowledge I learn and I’m never not learning whether it’s a new skill with hair or business knowledge I didn’t know. I’m currently in college and my major is business administration. I hope to gain all the skills I couldn’t over the next four years.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Some obstacles I’ve faced were not having a workspace, having to travel to all my clients around the city, and slow weeks when people don’t book can also be discouraging.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self-taught hairstylist. I specialize in wig installs and sew-ins. I’m known for giving the scalp illusion with every head I encounter. I am different from other stylists because I am so young. I started doing hair when I was 17 in high school and I’ve managed to build a small business that has so far been successful.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Due to covid, I’ve just been more cautious and more sanitary. Also, it gave me time to come up with better business plans and actually execute some of the plans.
