Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Mylaijah, but I go by Hollywood. My business name is called HollywoodTheArtistt. I am a professional tattoo artist and piercer. I come from a very “artistic” family background so art was always in my blood. I always had other hobbies that I took seriously but drawing was never one of them. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with drawing or where I wanted to go with it. I always had a love for tattoos I would literally got a get a new tattoo every other month just because. Getting tattoos was a stress reliever for me it was something that made me happy. One day I was just coming from getting a tattoo done on my hand and I was just thinking to myself. “I have all these tattoos that I love and drawing is that one hobby that I have that I never took seriously, so why not try tattooing” and that’s exactly what I did. That same night I watched many videos on products I would need, how to start, what to expect, etc. The next morning I ordered everything I needed to start. Eventually, everything got to me and I got started. People recommended I try to start on “fake practice skin” to get the hang of things but it just wasn’t working for me. So I then took the risk and tattooed myself. I was beyond nervous but I’m all about taking risks because you never know the outcome. Once I felt comfortable, I started tattooing friends and family. Ever since then, I have skyrocketed more than I ever thought I would.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In my opinion, nothing will ever be 100% smooth, there’s also going to be some bumps in the road. But, the bumps in the road is what will build you to be stronger and better. In the beginning, it wasn’t so smooth for me, I had to learn from my mistakes such has a tattoo line not being straight and me having to figure out what I can do to fix it. It was always trials and tribulations but as time went by things became smooth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional tattoo artist and piercer. In the tattoo world, I specialize in neo-traditional, cartoon and aesthetic styles. I make sure that my work stands out more than other artists. Even though my style is simple and chic, its very unique. When it comes to piercings, I specialize in all piercings types such as facial piercings, surface, lip, oral, etc. I enhanced my knowledge to be educated in all piercings types because I have noticed that everyone has a different preference on what they like, so I make sure that I can accommodate their needs. What I am most proud how even though it took me a while I was able to find my style and flow when it comes my business, so because of that I know that I am on the right path.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is when from elementary to high school, I always was in some type of artistic class. If it has to do with drawing composition, fine arts, painting, etc. in elementary school during class, I always use to doodle on my papers during classes of random stuff I felt like drawing. If it has to do with cartoon characters, flowers or just lines. My teachers always use to get mad at me because instead of me doing my work I was always drawing. One of my teachers seen me drawing a whole bunch of flowers on my paper and complimented me on it and asked me why won’t consider taking an art class. I never thought about it but I considered doing so. That same teacher then told me that she was going to talk to the art teacher about having me in their class the next marking period. As time went by the next marking period, I was able to be in an art class and expressed my artistic ways. I’ve been in the art world ever since, if it wasn’t for the teacher that acknowledge my doodling on my papers I wouldn’t have known how good I was in the art world today.
