Today we’d like to introduce you to Hurst
Hi Hurst, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been in love with music for as long as I can remember—literally writing songs about playground crushes in kindergarten from the swing set. Jesse McCartney was a huge influence growing up. I think it’s because he showed me pop music can be both sexy and vulnerable, and he was the first time I saw a guy heralded for embracing his softer, more emotional side. I learned a ton from guitar and vocal lessons, but playing live is what really pushed me to grow. Early on, I tried being the sweat-it-out-on-the-dancefloor-type pop star I thought people wanted, but that’s not who I am most of the time. Now, I’d call my style cozy: I want my songs to be honest, romantic, and introspective—the kind you turn to when you need someone to say the shit you’re afraid to say. Right now, I’m recording new tracks inspired by some major life changes over the last few years, and I’m looking to open on tour for a big artist soon. I’m grateful every single day that I get to do this, and I’ve got more singles and an EP on the way—so stay tuned!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
You know, it’s been a rollercoaster for sure. I grew up playing music in the church and I think that helped me grow and refine my craft in a million ways. However, it also created a ton of pressure I didn’t know how to handle as a kid coming to terms with his identity as a queer man. At 22, I was an Associate Worship Pastor developing teams and leading 3,000+ people every weekend. When I started poking holes in all the harmful stuff I was taught and ultimately came out, I lost a lot of (if not most of) the support system I had. I was angry, scared, and really vulnerable. On the other side of it all though, I’m the healthiest version of me yet and the most honest (both in my day-to-day and in my music). These last few years have been one hell of a journey but I’m a better me on the other side of it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I feel like I’ve got a pretty distinctive sound that blends emotionally-charged singer/songwriter vibes with anthemic pop melodies. I’m a big fan of smooth vocals, earworm melodies, and emo-boy lyrics that cut deep. I want to make music that connects so casually you might cry at inopportune times and leave you feeling like you’ve found a new best friend. I’d say my lyrics set me apart and are often what I’m most proud of / excited by. When I can be fully me (and sometimes brutally honest) in my lyrics I feel like my fans connect in ways I never expected.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
