Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaala Hudson
Jaala, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been passionate about beauty and knew early on that I wanted to be my own boss, build a legacy, and uplift others. My love for makeup started in competitive dance, where I saw it as a form of artistic expression.
I launched It Girl Makeovers to create an inclusive space where anyone can feel like an “It Girl.” Initially focused on editorial looks, I’ve since shifted to the subtle glam my audience loves. Now, as a college-based makeup artist at Kennesaw State, my business has grown exponentially, connecting me with clients from all backgrounds—even internationally with clients traveling from the UK and Nigeria! To me, makeup is more than just artistry—it’s a personal, transformative experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it wasn’t a smooth road at all. When I was first launching my brand, I handled everything myself—logos, website, graphics—because hiring help wasn’t in my budget. I’ve always had an optimistic mindset, so I believed I could figure it all out. I spent days building my website, and just when I was almost done, all my progress got erased. I cried, cried, and cried again, and had a full meltdown. I was devastated because I had set a specific launch date and now had to push it back. But after pulling myself together, I redid the entire site—even better than before.
When I finally launched, I expected bookings right away, but my first client didn’t come until two or three months later. It was an immensely discouraging time, making me question if my brand stood out. There have been slow periods—even now—but since that first client, I’ve never gone a month without being booking.
Being in the beauty industry is tough and requires resilience. I’ve had clients cry in my chair, redo full faces, and even offer emotional support along the way. It’s a competitive field, but I’ve learned that confidence in your craft is everything. Your clients will book with you not just for your skills, but for the unique experience you provide.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist at Kennesaw State University, specializing in long-lasting, seamless looks—from soft, neutral glam to bold, editorial styles. I’m known for my artistry, kind spirit, and the stunning photoshoots I create with my clients.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come, the brand awareness I’ve built, and my perseverance. Knowing that my younger self would be proud of where I am today is incredibly fulfilling.
What sets me apart personally is my mindset—I have a deep, intentional way of thinking that’s beyond my years. Those who know me understand that my perspective is different from the average 19-year-old.
In terms of artistry, my ability to enhance natural features while keeping my clients looking like themselves makes my work unique. Many return not only for my technique but also for the long-lasting, flawless results I provide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck, I believe in the power of Yeshua. God has brought me through ups and downs that were necessary for my growth and wisdom. By living in this world but not being of it, it’s taught me that doing God’s will is what truly matters.
