Today we’d like to introduce you to Jahmir Greenwell.
Hi Jahmir, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Introducing the up-and-coming young actor Jahmir Greenwell! Hailing from Dekalb County in Georgia, Jahmir always had a love for storytelling and performing. With the encouragement of his family and friends, he began pursuing acting at the age of 11.
It all began with a background role in the movie “The Underdoggs” starring Snoop Dogg—the best experience I’ve ever had! I was part of the main face team, which led to some significant camera time. Even my mom has a cameo! LOL
From there, my mom booked me a feature role in the movie called “A Christmas Rescue,” currently available on BET+. I was only supposed to portray the younger child of the actor, but upon arrival on set, the one and only Mrs. Robin Givens was the director, and she decided to give us speaking lines. She’s the coolest!
While on set, my mom struck up conversations with other moms and discovered that one of them was a talent coach with connections to agents. She was incredibly generous and offered me “FREE,” yes, “FREE” headshots with a very talented photographer, Ms. Lauren, from HOTT Theatre. We are immensely grateful for her assistance in our journey’s beginning!
That’s how I ended up with my agent, Maria Turner, from The Smith Talent Agency!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to becoming a young actor has definitely had its challenges. It’s important to acknowledge that it’s not always smooth sailing in the entertainment industry, especially for young actors who are just starting out. There can be intense competition, rejections, and setbacks along the way. Balancing auditions, rehearsals, and performances with school and other responsibilities can also be quite demanding.
However, facing and overcoming these challenges can also be part of the growth process. Each obstacle presents an opportunity to learn, improve, and become more resilient. With determination, perseverance, and a supportive network, many young actors navigate these hurdles and continue to pursue their dreams in the industry.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well-being a professional actor is pretty awesome and can involve various aspects beyond just performing.
Here’s a more detailed look at what it entails:
1. Auditions and Casting Calls: attend numerous auditions and casting calls to land roles in TV shows, movies, commercials, and theater productions. These auditions can be frequent and require preparation, including memorizing lines and performing in front of casting directors.
2. Balancing Education: This often involves attending regular school classes, via online. Managing schoolwork alongside auditions, rehearsals, and filming schedules requires discipline and time management skills.
3. Rehearsals and Performances: Once cast in a role, you typically participate in rehearsals to prepare for performances. This may involve blocking scenes, practicing lines, and working with directors and fellow cast members.
4. On-Set Etiquette and Professionalism: This includes following directions from directors and crew members, respecting fellow actors, maintaining focus during filming, and being punctual and reliable.
5. Parental Support and Guidance: my Parents involvement is crucial in my acting life. My Mom often serve as a manager, advocate, and Chaperone! My MOM DO NOT PLAY AROUND lol!!!
6. Emotional Challenges: includes rejection from auditions and the pressure to perform.
7. Legal and Financial Considerations: Child actors are subject to labor laws and regulations designed to protect their rights and ensure fair treatment. This includes restrictions on working hours, requirements for trust funds to safeguard earnings, and provisions for parental supervision on set.
8. Career Development and Growth: As child actors gain experience and exposure, they may have opportunities to expand their careers into different genres or mediums. Some may transition into adult roles, while others may pursue careers behind the scenes, such as directing or producing.
Overall, it’s pretty cool to be a child actor!!!
