Life & Work with Jasmine Saunders

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Saunders.

Hi Jasmine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in the inner city of Chicago, it was rare that I would see a lot of entrepreneurs. The barbers or hairstylists were the closest successful career independence I’d ever gotten near. And, it was no secret that that was where I spent most of my time with my mom, observing the talents and gifts of the adults at the time. That’s really where my love for doing hair began, I would always be so fascinated with the before and after of the clients. I also noticed how each hairstylist would have their own unique techniques for perfecting their craft. It was love at first sight. I would often urge my mom to buy me the Bratz heads so that I could practice different hairstyles. I most vividly remember learning to French braid on the Bratz head, which inevitably turned into a core memory for me because I’ve never forgotten that. Fast-forwarding to today, my everlasting love for the craft of doing hair has led to me developing my own unique techniques. I would say I am a self-taught hairstylist, nevertheless, always looking and learning.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, the hair industry is indeed large and constantly growing. Though every stylist may not specialize in the same things, there are always other options out there. Knowing that can sometimes be discouraging which can sometimes affect the consistency of the business. Though throughout all of that, I am able to always remember my why and keep going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do hair, specializing in natural hair and weave extensions. I am most proud that though I am self-taught, I am always looking for ways to grow and get better. I think what best sets me apart is my desire to constantly learn all while openly accepting constructive criticism.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like how welcoming the city is to new faces, it’s easy to grow. I also love how entrepreneurship is also always encouraged. There are always classes to be taken with new techniques to be learned. I feel like most stylists within the city aren’t selfish, they’re open to helping beginners when available. I least enjoy the customer service skills, I feel like that’s something many creatives within the city lack. I don’t think many cherish consistent clients because there are always new clients moving throughout the city.
