Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Yancey.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started in my hometown of Boston where I was a barber for 15 years. During that time, I developed a massive clientele. My clientele consisted of blue-collar workers, entrepreneurs, & Athletes from the Boston Celtics, New England Patriots, & Boston Red Sox. After spending that 15yrs building that Clientele, I felt like I needed a change. Boston is kinda of conservative when it comes to haircuts. I felt like I needed to be in more of a show me type of state. That’s when I moved to Atlanta (2009). I started all over. What took me 15yrs to do in Boston, I did in 18 months in Atlanta. After 6yrs making my way through the Atlanta hair industry., I was discovered while cutting 1 of my NBA clients whose wife at the time had a personal stylist that was in the TV Film industry… She noticed me & how carried myself with outstanding character. She asked me have I ever worked onset? My reply was no but often wondered how to go about doing so. She took my information & 3 days later, I got a call asking was I available to work on set. Mind they don’t tell you what it’s for (NDA Purposes) you just show up at the address they send you. So I go & Boom, it’s the 1st Black Panther the very 1st set I worked on. From the day my life changed & my doing hair for Tv/Film changed. Since then, I’ve done Black Panther 1 ( Marvel)
Avengers Infinity War (Marvel)
The Bobby Brown Story (Bet)
American Soul Season 1&2 (Bet)
Raising Dion Season 1&2 (Netflix)
Vacations Friends (Lil Rell Howery) (Hulu)
Respect (Aretha Franklin)
Bad Boys 3!
Tyler Perry‘s Sistas Season 5!
PValley Seasons 1&2
Iron Heart (Marvel)
The Other Black Girl (Hulu)
& currently working in BMF season 3
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I 1st relocated I would say the 1st 90 days were rough trying to rebuild a clientele & adjust to new surroundings. It’s always tough when you’re the new guy in the barbershop nobody wants to go to the guy who’s always sitting down lol. So when I got somebody in my chair I would take along time just so people waiting could see my work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work ethic is what I’m most proud of.’ I love to work & create. I’m the type of barber that client appreciates the little things. Not only can I cut good. & attentive to detail. It’s the things like I shampoo the hair before cutting, don’t blow in my clippers, if I drop a comb I’m not going to pick it up off the floor & use it on them. I’m time efficient meaning I’m the type of barber who starts at 6am not 3pm lol.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
For any barber or hairstylist looking to advance to into Tv/ Film or gain celebrity clientele. It starts with foundation & your foundation is the chair you’re currently behind. Any celebrity client or high-end client I gained came from behind the chair cutting average blue-collar people. I say that to say you never know who’s in your chair so conversation is mandatory & always taking 1 more head whether it’s an appointment or walk-in because you just never know where that person can take you.
