Life & Work with Jay J The Producer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay J The Producer.

So excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in a strict Christian home as a preachers kid and coming from a musical family, music was one of the first things that I gravitated to. At the age of 6, I started to play the drums for the church that my parents pastor. From the drums, I moved to the keyboard and eventually I learned how to play all the instruments.

After graduating high school and making the decision to pursue music, I began to play around town in Orlando, FL(my hometown) in the music community at various gigs. Anything music related that made money, I was interested whether it was funerals, weddings, top 40 bands, banquets and much more! With a hunger and a grind mentality, I eventually stumbled across the ultimate love which changed my life! MUSIC PRODUCTION!! I had many opportunities to sit in many sessions with my longtime friend Byron Chambers (Mr.Talbox). As Mr.Talkbox began his journey as an artist, I began to create beats for him and other artist.

After creating such a huge archive of songs for many artists, in 2010 I won my first Dove Award with a major Christian hip hop group called “Group 1 Crew” for Hip hop song of the year! With gaining attention from hard work and persistence, following that I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Q Parker from 112 R&B group, Musiq Soulchild, Jonathan Mcreynolds, Montell Jordan, J Moss, The Legendary Clark Sisters, Darwin Hobbs and many more. I have had 3 songs to break past the top 20 gospel billboard charts and even pass the top 10.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been an easy road!! This road has been more like a dirt road with all kind of rocks, hills, bumps and dead ends. Lol. I been through people stealing beats and putting their name on it, playing gigs and the person paying leaves before paying, bogus contracts, people lowballing your prices and so many more crazy experiences. But those examples made me who I am today. I look at it as a test that I had to overcome to see how serious I was about the industry and to understand how important it is to have your business together.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a music producer that enjoy producing RnB and soul music! I’m mostly known for the gospel songs I’ve produced for Mr. Talkbox “Never Leave You” and Darwin Hobbs “Get Ready”. Im definitely proud of those songs. Both of those songs broke passed the top 10 gospel billboards. That is major for me in my book! My whole mission is to continue to be a part of songs that will inspire people and help them get through their tough times in life. Especially in the times that we are living in today.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For anyone out there that has a dream or something that they are striving for, I would advise that you are very passionate about it! If you’re not passionate or have a true love for it, you will give up as soon as the first test comes. When you are starting out, things will be hard, but you have to look at it as a learning experience. There is a lesson to learn in every bad situation! Giving up is really easy but staying focused on your dream is the real challenge! Lastly, make sure you take care of your business. It will save you a lot of unnecessary time.
