Today we’d like to introduce you to Jody Nguyen.
Hi Jody, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, alike most other little girls, I wanted to be a model growing up. My mother was my biggest role model being she did a few calendars while in our motherland- I still remember seeing those outdated calendars up on our walls at home. Although it was a dream of mine, I eventually convinced myself that I would never be able to thrive in the modeling industry because the beauty standard at the time was the stereotypical 6ft model, size 00, perfect skin, no tattoos, etc., which is all the total opposite of me!
It wasn’t until I moved to Atlanta about 3 years ago that the idea sprouted again. This time, I felt more confident about it because there were so many different looks that were in demand. Certain photographers, brands, businesses and creatives looking for MY look. I’m now a little over a year into taking it as serious as I have and I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside some incredible people- networking and building up my portfolio. I’m truly blessed because not only has this become another form of income for me, I was also able to make the little girl in me happy and her dream come true.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Now that I’m thinking about it- yes, it has been smooth. I’ve ran into a few complications here and there, but ultimately the experience was fun and exciting for me.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that I struggled along the way because I don’t solely rely on modeling for my livelihood. Unfortunately, that’s not the narrative for some models who actually do. Being compensated for your services works both ways and nowadays it’s easy for models to get overlooked when it comes down to it. Time is just as important as payment is in this field, but it’s not as respected. As a model, you must really set some ground rules for what you will and will not tolerate. Otherwise, this field will take advantage of you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work in healthcare as my 9-5. Well, I work overnight so that’s technically wrong, but I’m a radiologic technologist specifically working in cat-scan and in my spare time/“off days” is when I model.
I came up with a slogan for myself- “Model by day. Hero by night” because I wouldn’t give myself any breaks between both fields when I began this journey. I am proud to say that because of my career I was able to fund myself when I was modeling for free and working towards getting my name recognized here in Atlanta- thus making it easier for me to focus on the goal and learning along the way.
The modeling scene is growing everyday, but one of the main things that sets me apart from others is, of course the obvious, my tattoos. I have multiple but they’re hidden. My favorite is the unique, centered chest piece I have that’s usually the start up of many conversations. Aside from that, I’m constantly being asked, “What are you?” My features can be and have been mistaken for so many different ethnicities. I’ve been called racially ambiguous because of this. People tend to guess everything I’m not- hah! Can you guess?
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
One important thing I think all models who are starting out should know is how easy it is to put yourself in a box. You never want to limit yourself to one look/one photographer when you’re creating a portfolio. Fluidity is key! Practice your posing in the mirror, learn how to control your facial expressions, and relax your toes during photoshoots! Don’t be afraid to look “silly” because 9 times out of 10, those shots will be the best ones. Be professional AND personable. That means come 15 mins early and ready to work, but also greet everyone on set with a smile and small talk. Making an impression on people will work more in your favor than you’d ever think!
When your portfolio is ready learn how to pitch yourself- that was something I wish I did sooner.
