Today we’d like to introduce you to John Carter.
Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a child, I was always intrigued with the idea of BBQ. I remember loving the smell of wood burning and even more once the food was put on the cooker. My family wasn’t one to barbecue or grill that often. Only occasionally, like the 4th of July or birthdays. I always thought to myself, When I’m older, I’ll make this a staple hobby of mine. Around the age of 18, I purchased my first Weber Kettle and I’ve been learning the art of BBQ to this day. I currently own an Old Country BBQ Pits Pecos, two Weber Kettles, a Pit Boss Pro Series Pellet Smoker, a Blackstone griddle and a few older grills that I started out with.
In Oct 2021, I decided to take on a new challenge. After watching several BBQ content creators, I decided to start the Salt Pepper and Fire Youtube channel. Shortly after, I created the Salt Pepper and Fire Instagram page as well. My goal for the channel was originally just for fun and/or to learn a new skill. Cooking on camera, speaking on camera, filming, video and photo editing were all foreign to me before starting. To my surprise, I picked up on these skills somewhat quickly and began to gain an audience on my channel. I’ve seen consistent growth in my subscriber count on Youtube and Instagram, I’ve come to know several great content creators I now call friends, and I continue to learn new ideas and techniques to add to my craft.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, My BBQ journey has been smooth. However, there’s been several times that I’ve needed to unlearn things that I learned early on while driving into the craft. As far as the content creation aspect, technology and platforms continue to evolve, so there is always new information to learn, new methods to engage with our audience and new rules and regulations to incorporate in our knowledge base.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
For the past 19 years, I’ve worked in the medical field. In the last 12 years, I’ve worked as an administrative registered nurse. I work for a company that generates 3 billion dollars per year. The last three years have been the most taxing of my career yet rewarding as well.
How do you think about happiness?
A cool windy day with post oak burning in my smoker and a nice meal being prepared for my family.
