Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Middlebrooks. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Prince George’s County, MD native, Jonathan Middlebrooks, stage name JMB Music, is a saxophonist, songwriter, and singer. After releasing his first EP, The Polymath, he was afforded the opportunity to perform as an opening act for Grammy Award-Winning artist Chrisette Michelle, and Grammy Nominated Elle Varner. His most recent Ep “Late To The Party” & “The Summer’s Ours” showcased his versatility as a writer and ear for music. Since then, he has been continuing to put out music but diving further into writing for upcoming indie artist. Since the pandemic, he has also performing more with the saxophone at weddings, birthdays, cookouts, and private dinners. His current focus is on continuing to expand the space he holds in the realm of music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but a smooth road but I think that’s what makes where I’m at now so special. Very long story short I had a manager at one point that I trusted and when things that were promised fell through, I was stuck with that bad end of the deal. Due to the stress, I was putting myself under during that time I had some health complications as well but I’m blessed to say I am fully healed and healthy today. Took me some years to recover from what I experienced and did trying to find my way in my early years but during that time I never stopped creating and pursuing what I saw for myself in this music space.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, I am a songwriter, singer, and saxophonist. I truly only started singing to show people I could write good songs. Songwriting is truly where my passion is, I would say that’s my specialty as well as the saxophone. I would say I’m known for being a lover and expressive. Most of the content I write is about human interaction and the emotions, and thoughts that we experience in different relationship dynamics. I would say I’m most proud of my ability to help bring another artist vision to life and helping them construct the music they want to make, it’s a fulfilling feeling for sure. I think the fact that I play the saxophone sets me apart, people identify me with the sax and it also opens up a whole new world that I can dive in and out of whenever I want musically.
What matters most to you?
I think being a genuine person matters to me most. I want anybody that I work with or create with to always feel like I brought genuine effort, feedback, and help to the situation. That I move with integrity. I’ve seen what’s it’s like firsthand to be on the other side of someone in the industry not moving with integrity and I think we need more people in the music industry who will.
