Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonny Warren.
Hi Jonny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After graduating with a BFA in Studio Art from Florida State University in 2010, my wife and I moved to Atlanta and have been here ever since. I spent a lot of my early years submitting art for group exhibitions at galleries like Mint and Mason Fine Art, and I made great connections with other artists through those opportunities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with any artist, a lot of my struggles come from finding my own voice. I experimented a lot (and still do) with different mediums to really find what suited the visuals I had in my head. Even now, there are a lot of ideas I’ve had in sketchbooks from years ago that I feel more confident in my skills to bring to life today.
What I’ve learned over the past decade is to give yourself grace. when you hit creative blocks. Taking a step back can offer just as much if not more clarity than constantly driving forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in pen & ink drawing, digital drawing/painting, and mural painting. I am most known for detailed depictions of animals (mostly birds) inspired by old etchings and symbolic motifs.
I am most proud of the last mural I completed as part of the Microsoft Art Collection at the new Microsoft Office building across from Atlanta Station.
I think what sets me apart from others is my unique cultural perspective that goes into creating my work. Being half Filipino and Black and having that multicultural upbringing has allowed me to experience life with an open point of view. With this, I try to create art that can be openly interpreted by anyone through their own unique life experiences.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Yu-Kai Lin has played a huge role in my growth as an artist. He has been a great mentor in how I approach visual languages in gallery settings, which has aided me in creating more cohesive work.
I also have the amazing support of my wife Ashley Cline who I attended art school with. I can always come to her for honest critiques, just as we provided for each other in classes.
