Life & Work with Joshua Digby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Digby.

Hi Joshua, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got into Video at about age 13. My stepfather, who was an Audio/Video engineer, used to have to get up at like 5am every Sunday to work at Impact Church as the lead tech engineer and one Sunday, I was just curious as to what he was doing because all the cameras and sounds boards looked so interesting and one Sunday he offered to bring me along and the first “job” he gave me was as a camera operator. I got into it seriously at about age 16 and I bought my first camera after working at McDonald’s and I started with photography then found out my camera had video settings and it was a wrap from there. I took an internship at 17 under Terrance Crowley who had done amazing work for Tasha Cobbs, Anthony Hamilton, and a bunch of other dope people and he taught me a lot of what I know now. Once I got to college at Georgia State University, I started shooting everyday, non-stop and then I suddenly got the name for my Business “Safe House Media LLC”, a.k.a, “The Safe House” after realizing that Video/Film was my safe space, where I could express myself freely with no limitations. And now, here we are today working under some amazing directors and running my own production company.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth at all but, nothing worth having in life comes without a price. A lot of my struggles have come from overload, with me being so young I tend to take on a lot. However, I’ve learned, and am still learning, to not lean into the anxious side of my brain that wants to believe that in order to succeed faster, I have to overwhelm myself on a daily basis.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a video director/DP. I specialize in Music videos and Commercials and I’d have to say I’m most proud of having the opportunity to work with Jack Daniels and Brown Forman, as well as working with T.Crowley Productions and Cinevision ATL. I think what sets me apart from others is my endurance and vision, I have a very vivid plan in my head for where I want to go, I won’t stop, and I will do whatever it takes to get there.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Don’t tell anyone, but 48 Laws of power is my favorite thus far. “In the Blink of an eye” has been a great read for me especially for my storytelling. “Why We Make Movies” by my mentor George Alexander, both his insight of the film industry and his push for black representation have been a huge help in my journey thus far.
