Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Host.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It has taken many years of hard work to get to the point I am today with my business. I’m one of the lucky few who love their work. As a mature portrait photographer, I can now teach and coach and share my experiences with the younger generation coming into my field. Art is still art even though we now add AI to almost everything we do. Composition, impact, presentation and light remain the same.
I started my business life in the 80s with a degree in Communications that eventually lead me to the Corporate world, two large companies and some terrific people. I didn’t actually start my own business until the late 90s and my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. So word to the wise, if you have a passion, Go For It!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in life is smooth. As I said earlier, the passion will carry you through the bad times and yes, there will always be those. Belief in yourself will help tremendously, a good business plan and marketing plan will be your guidelines. You just have to power through it. It will get better.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think that being a creative is for me anyway, the best of all possible worlds. Also being my own boss is something I was born to do. I’ve had over 25 years of being a portrait photographer and I couldn’t be more proud of it. I have been told that my work brings out the emotions in people. What a wonderful compliment since I had been photographing families and children at the time. Now, Ballet Dancers are my pride and joy. I have been specializing in this area for about 6-7 years. All the elements I mentioned earlier are what hopefully make me stand out along with a “Look” I created many years ago by using graphics and textures along with contrast and colors. I feel very blessed to constantly create this kind of work.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
As a California transplant, I am loving the small-town feel that I get from my neighborhood. It’s a slower pace, at least it use to be and I love the diversity of the city. So much to do, so much art here, so many wonderful people, so many incredible restaurants and shops. It’s just a great place to live and work.
