Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Ball. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Justin Ball is an accomplished producer, educator, director, and theatre manager with over 20 years of leadership experience. He has produced shows and events for the Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons, the Writers Theatre, Penguin/Random House, and Google. For over a decade, Justin taught theatre management and directing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Most recently, Justin served as Managing Director for the Sharon Playhouse, helping to transform a local community theatre into a small professional summer stock theatre featuring the industry’s top talent, including Tony Winners Bryce Pinkham, Lindsay Mendez, Karen Ziemba, and Academy Award winner Glenn Close. He moved to Atlanta in 2017, where he was a stay-at-home Dad for his now five-year-old daughter Josephine. He holds a BFA in Theatre & Dance from Trinity College and an MFA in Directing from Brooklyn College.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road in non-profit theatre is never smooth! However, I have been fortunate enough to always have a clear career pathway. I have had the pleasure of working at some incredible arts and educational organizations, including Manhattan Theatre Club, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and the Sharon Playhouse – and I have always been clear on the right time to join or leave an organization. Joining Stage Door during a global pandemic was clearly the right choice for me, but it was obviously filled with the extraordinary challenges our entire industry was facing at the time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As both a director and a producer, I pride myself on my ability to bring the best work out of my collaborators and unite a team of artists around a single purpose. I think one of my greatest superpowers in the rehearsal room is flaming a spark or impulse into a full-fledged idea or choice.
I have a passion for developing new work and assembling teams of collaborators. I love non-linear stories with deeply flawed characters that expose moments of sincere human connection.
How do you think about happiness?
My joys include my incredible seven-year-old daughter, playing poker, cooking & baking, and anything that takes me into nature! Running a small non-profit demands a lot of time, so I look forward to finding moments to refresh, unplug, and decompress outside the rehearsal room or theatre!
