Life & Work with Kála J

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kála J.

Kála, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I could remember, I loved to sing and perform. I was that kid that would make my dad turn the radio off in the car so I could sing to him on the way to school. I begged my grandma for a karaoke machine so I could put on shows in the living room. In elementary school, I would choreograph dances for my friends and I to perform at the talent shows. As I got older, I learned how to play the violin, the piano and began taking voice lessons. As a teenager, I realized that I was a very deep thinker with big emotions – so I began writing music to express how I felt. It was only right that I got into the studio. I released my first single “Honeymoon” in 2018, and from there, I knew I was meant to be an artist. As far as video content, I’ve always had a youtube channel. I knew that God gave me all this personality for a reason. But it wasn’t until last year that I became more intentional with my content. Thus, the birth of my podcast: Kála’s Couch. My merch line, KakeTeam Apparel, launched shortly after.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never a smooth road when you get it out of the mud. Oddly enough, I think the most challenging obstacle has been finding my confidence. I’ve been on stages where I could see people laughing at me in the audience and I kept on singing. I’ve filmed plenty of videos that didn’t get a lot of views, but I never stopped filming. Sometimes being a creative can feel invasive, cringy, and extremely vulnerable. But in this industry, you have to be bold enough to believe in yourself even when nobody else does. Because when it comes to my dreams, I cannot afford to be insecure.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an overall creative and very hands-on with my craft. Any lyric you hear me sing is written by me. When I’m in the studio, I’m not only the artist but the vocal producer as well. And sometimes, I help create the beats. A lot of my (unreleased) songs started off with just my voice and some chord progressions on my piano. My youtube channel and podcast is authentic and never scripted. And anybody you see me filming with is a phenomenal person with genuine energy. Even down to the merch – it’s stylish, but it all represents something. KAKE stands for Know Abundance and Keep Elevating. Everything I do is intentional and done with the utmost care.

What’s next?
I am currently locked in the studio these days, as well as filming season two of Kála’s Couch. I’m so excited to reintroduce myself to the world in 2023 through this new era of creativity. My music has been known to be storytellings of pain and heartache. I feel like I’m most known for my diss tracks, LOL. But now it’s time to have fun. My new music is grown and sexy but also light and playful. Now that I’ve relocated to Atlanta, I can’t wait to meet more creatives and get some fresh conversations going for season three of Kála’s Couch. Overall, I am just grateful to be here and share my gifts with the world.
