Life & Work with Kat Wood of Athens, Georgia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Wood

Hi Kat, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been obsessed with art and creativity, so photography and filmmaking has interested me for as long as I can remember. I was lucky enough to become very good friends with a fellow photographer, Craig Gum, back in 2009. Thats how it started, I was always mesmerized by what he created, so when I got the chance to get in front of the camera, it was a no brainer! I did some modeling for him and a few others over the years, and being on the sets and seeing the process was so cool, I had to get in on it. I slowly started to learn and play around occasionally here and there with it, but it wasnt until the last few years that I really got going. I inherited my dad’s camera that he didnt use, and had no idea what i was doing or how to get started. I wound up asking one of my best friends, who is a drag performer, if I could come to the shows and take pictures for them. They were so gracious and uplifting, and thats where I really was able to get the practice I needed. That led to a lot of cool opportunities for me, as I’m sure it will continue to. I try to approach everything with kindness and excitement, and I truly believe that makes all the difference.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the biggest struggle I’ve had to work through is my own anxiety and imposter syndrome. I’m still pretty young in my photography journey, so I know there will be bumps in the road, but I believe that as long as I approach everything honestly and authentically it will turn out alright.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m still very much finding my niche, and I’m still so excited about everything that I want to try it all! Currently, I really enjoy shooting live music, that was one of my driving factors for starting photography. There is something about capturing the essence of live performers that I find so unique. I still shoot the drag performances and do local events, The other main thing I really love is street photography, there is something special about capturing beauty in the normal things we see each day, And of course, I love adding a little bit of gloom or horror into my work.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you have a dream, go after it. I completely changed course in my mid 30’s, and I’ve never been happier! Also, say yes to opportunities, even if it scares you.
