Life & Work with Keenan Hudson of Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keenan Hudson.

Hi Keenan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
(Snipped from Biography) Keenan Hudson, aka Mr. Insane Genes

Mr.InsaneGenes, is the creator of “All New Heroes: Watcher”! He does all the pencils, inks, and color work! Did we also mention he’s the writer… because he is.

Mr.InsaneGenes is technically a self- taught artist, not going to college for illustration, but interestingly enough, for film instead. He has been honing his skills by soaking in information from books, social media, and meeting other artists. Even though he hasn’t taken formal art classes at a university level, he has taken numerous art classes throughout his years in primary school.

Mr.InsaneGenes has been developing the idea for “All New Heroes: Watcher” for over 10 years but has been putting pen to paper for it since late 2020. He hopes to see ” All New Heroes: Watcher” take on the world someday and see if it can withstand the test of time amongst the greatest stories in the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride, which may mean I’m on the right track. Being a self-taught artist means you are your own teacher, student, critique and biggest fan. So, finding the rhythm of self-support was challenging. Finding reason for making art is and will always be a challenge, especially during the raise of commercial ai and the feeling of the imminent decline of sequential art. The decline is just a feeling though, because in a lot of aspects, sequential art is also on the rise. The rollercoaster of emotions can be disheartening to manage but learning to manage the emotions can guide you like a lantern in the night. For every hobby, there is an entire ecosystem of people participating, like animals… in the woods, and that’s what it’s like in the comic book world. You just assume that there are just people who make comics and people who read them, like plants and deer. But there’s rivers, ponds, dens, and niches- even up in the trees there a community! In the vein of the analogy, that would be conventions, comic bookstores, artist alley, exhibitor halls, art managers, event organizers, and cosplayers- even furies! So, to jump into the ecosystem, you feel out of place and overwhelmed, but you learn that if you want a space, you need to make space! And that’s more or less where I am now, learning my place in this ecosystem, solidifying it, and hopefully develop my own community. Well not hopefully, determinately.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the artist, writer, and editor of “All New Heroes: Watcher” and I specialize in writing but I’m sure I’m known for being just an artist. That, or the guy who calls himself “Mr. InsaneGenes”.

I am most proud of completing a comic book. I am most proud when I finish a comic book.

As far as I have seen, I may be one of very, very few who writes AND draws their own comics.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
YouTube has demonstrated that it continues to be a valuable resource of information, connection, and discovery. I find a lot of inspiration in music. How artist traverse the industry, explore their style, and experiment with their music inspires me to replicate that enthusiasm for their craft to my own. Nerdcore music has been a big part of my development as well. Watching and listening to these indies “do their own thing” and develop their own community has helped me drive my artist creation and reminds me that it is possible to find your “thing”, get good at it, and be successful,
